Minnesota!

I'm kind of okay without the snow  business for free ranging chickens but...I do like to cross country ski...and last year was a bust. Plus being a tourist area...snow brings in snowmobilers on the weekends and that is a shot in the arm for the winter economy.

Holm good luck deerhunting.  Your turkeys and other fowl are gorgeous there.  Pretty neat pen of birds.  Do you rotate the fence a bit to give them more greens?  Or is it buried fencing involved too?

Foxy I don't know what to make of your murdered grouse mystery other than to tell you to knock on some wood and be glad it wasnt one of your birdies.  It looks like bird of prey owl or hawk or eagle.  They may have dropped it or caught it there, plucked it a bit and then moved on with the goods.  IDK.. I think there are a couple scenarios to be had there.

Birds are out loving the free ranging yet. Foggy here today although temps are still up.

Put some chicken poop around my apple trees this morning.  See if we can't get those things a-growing good.

Kloppers sorry about the womanly hormone talk.  LOL.  Sometimes on this particular thread, I suppose you may have to put up with a little bit of that since there are half of us that are gals and the other half Tim the Tool man types.  Ar-Ar Ar.

Good idea with the apple trees! I have been chucking poop board scrapings on the garden but could drop some around our new trees. How much is too much? Don't want to burn them.

Also I suspect you ladies out number the guys by at least a few, but that's probably a good thing. It brings good perspective to things :)

Scandia: Bogtown Chick is a chick. LOL. I'm not sure if you were reading all of the oxytocin stuff....

Coffee congrats on the new fluffy family member. I love your chicken photos too. The girls are getting big and they look like they are in good shape. You'll be ruling the roost with those mealies! They have magical chicken control powers.

Holm you have some spoiled birds. Getting some water and weeds and pine trees to hide under. Watch out for your hawk! eek. Those geese sure do a number on the green though...don't they?

Klop I did think about the burning of the plants a bit but it's such poor clay like soil and I just wonder if a filtration of sorts would happen first to help dilute it. My folks are bringing over fireplace ashes today for the winter dusting bin...maybe I'll sprinkle some of those around the tree too...to help take the bite out of them.

Oh yes the geese love greens. I throw them grass every once in awhile. But but they are so cute. They are like toddlers. Theu stomp in the mud and splash amd play in it. They are my little babies that dont like when I hold them or scratch their head anymore. They stopped letting me scratch them at about 8-9 weeks. But what teen wants other to see them hanging oit with their "parents"??

Maybe I will wait unto the ground freezes. Then it will have the winter to mellow out and then slowly soak in as things thaw??

Good point Holm! LOL. Yes my teenagers feel the same about me. It shouldn't be different with the geese...unless of course you have some sort of treat to bring to the table. LOL

Good point Klop. I've already laid my down though...now...I wanted to empty my poop buckets. I'll just do the ash or get some lime. or just spread it out a bit....All the trees are on an incline of various sorts though...so I have a feeling things will run down hill and away from the tree so to speak...though too. Meh...sorta worried..but not really. We'll see I guess. I think the soil being a filter of sorts before it hits apple roots and the running off of stuff...and trees being pretty well established at two year mark on our property...Maybe I'm okay...?

Oh yeah. After fishing I brought them minnows and big night crawlers. Then they loved me. The second the food was gone they were too.

I think BC and LALA have the mystery of the dead grouse right. Makes the most sense.

Here is a picture of ED, and old one..

This is him today in mid molt,

He looks so skinny and shabby, but he is still the same great rooster. He found a "cracker" I am guessing grandkids dropped it, and he called the girls over instead of eating it.
