I am trying to understand all of you.

Only one person comment on the 48 pound turkey, (BUT it really was 30 pounds dressed.)

No one mentioned a turkey should be weighed without feathers and entails when being sold. I decided you guys were trying to save Blanchranch's from feeling like a fool for paying for guts and feathers, and were in awe of my salesmanship to be able to sell it to him that way.

We did not weigh him before we had him dressed, but I am guessing he was close to 50 pounds. I know when we carried him he was extremely heavy and trying to lay him down to dispatch him was extremely hard. Jeff had the job of holding him as he bled out, he struggle with that as he was really flopping and very strong.

I did not get 160 bucks either. Blanchranch was too cheap.

But even with that it was a good time, we enjoyed his company, which is not something that can be said about a craigslist buyer.

Sorry your day went so bad Minnie. I wonder why the rooster decided to attack you on that day. Bad timing on his part.

I have never had a rooster attack me, I think King George thought about it, but decided better of it. ( not that I would send him to camp, but he would have found himself spending more time inside looking outside.

Yep he was a Tom, he was number 3 in my flock, He was behind JJ and Sidekick. JJ only allowed sidekick and him to display. Of course, JJ put limits on his displays.

As long as we are talking turkey... @Minniechickmama do you worry about blackhead? Do you take any special precautions with your turkeys? I know ralphie is on sand so he doesn't have to worry. While quail is an 'if it happens' interest, I really want to raise a few turkeys next year. I have been reading on blackhead lately and like all things poultry related ralphie a belly button quote applies. Our environments should be fairly similar, Minnie, so hopefully you have some words of advice. Maybe it's just a hype that I'm reading into too much, but I don't want to go into this without considering it.

Your chances I would think are higher than mine, you have real soil down there most likely. BUT I would ask the County Agent or Vets if they have seen any cases it the area. I kind of have an if it happens "Oh well, I tired" I would miss the turkeys but know I could not get more if it is in my soil. Of course, my whole chicken things is like that, it is a hobby, I would find another, and I am not going to lose my life savings over them.

That little odd silkie. Bless her. has started laying for me again. She had 2 weeks or so of broodiness. Then she ran around for a week with the flock...last week. Yesterday and today I have two little cream colored eggs. She's the only one laying. Between the molt and 5 pm sunsets. I can't get over her sometimes. LOL. When she's broody it's a bit of a pain as she locks up the favorite nest. But I've learned to just deal with it and so have the other hens...just crowding in on her...is all. LOL.

I'm sorry I can't keep up with the turkey talk I have no knowledge to contribute other than I saw 8 wild ones ganged up in the In-laws yard a day ago. they are neat. MIL said they are hers and FIL's pets. LOL. Okay. And she said they were pretty cheap to feed. I shared that we lost Fleur and as someone who does not have chickens would say and as a MIL (albeit overall a pretty good one), "Well. It's just a chicken."

Yep just a chicken in which I've cared for by feeding it, collecting it's eggs, protected it with sturdy coop, washed it's butt when it was dirty. Got up morning and night to let out or tuck in. It's just a chicken. With a value of God knows what. And it's "ok" that it got picked off. Sometimes people don't see the bigger picture. I get what she meant...but she's obviously not looking at the whole picture. Nor would anyone who doesn't have chickens probably.
