Minnesota!

LaLa it was really too nice of a day to be inside, however, getting ready for Thanksgiving is great! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Personally I love cooking for people. I can spend so much time planning & preparing. I usually have a schedule posted in the cupboard for what needs to be done & when. I actually like the time alone cutting & chopping.

Speaking of food, one of my favorite topics, I have a vegetarian cookbook that I love to cook from. I made the chili in it & then added the hamburger for DH. Oh man, that came out fantastic. I admit I did add some smoked paprika to it. I also made some jalapeno corn muffins. I need to find a better recipe for that. We have a wine wholesaler who does Ribfest every year for customers. He does the ribs & chicken & the rest is pot luck. There is a chef who always brings the jalapeno corn muffies that are perfect, so sweet & spicy. He doesn't share his recipe. OK I'm drooling just thinking about them. *wipe off the keyboard*

I had one of those days where anything I wanted to get done had to wait for someone to move/fix/help something else.
ever since I read this yesterday or was it this morning? I've been craving jalopeno corn muffins. I can't get them out of my mind!

My hens have been enjoying the covered runs today. Plus they got a fresh chopped up pumpkin in each coop. I really need to get my heated water dishes put in soon. I've been procrastinating on that

Do it while it is still warm out if you can, I waited until it was freezing last year, that is not fun

If you crack an egg and it has little white bits hanging onto the yolk, it's been fertilized.
Not that you can then incubate that

at least you know the Roo is doing his thing
I thought the white was part of the chalzea (sp?) and had nothing to do with it being fertile? I try to find the bullseye in the yolk, though I'm never positive with that either, sometimes it's hard to tell.

You have no reason to be sorry. Sometimes us grown ups need to rein in and think about what we are talking about here. You are doing what you believe is right and you are helping to feed your family, there is nothing to be sorry for. The fact that you can speak up with all of us adults here and be as eloquent as you are and are not afraid to speak up, if you were my son, I would be very proud of you.
Ditto!!

y'all are in an amazing good mood for such a soggy night!

I got good news today, the guy with the 6 pullets wants to meet me THurs so I can pick them up. I don't know yet whether that is morning or after work - I sure hope I can get them home before dark.

If it is dark when I get them....then.....what am I doing with them Thursday night? I guess I could lock the flock out of half the coop and pop the newbies in there with food and water for a day. But 12 of the flock currently roosts in the back half, so there will be some unhappy hens. Am going to take Friday off work so I can work with integration over the weekend.

I can't wait. There is a a Red Star, a Buff Orpington, a Double Laced Barnvelder, a Dominique, a Plymouth Barred Rock Bantam, and a white Silkie Bantam, all about 7 months old. I am risking not quarantining them , which I would totally advise anyone else not to do, because it is a stupid move. Am doing so because my spare coop has quail in it, and because this family had chicks last year which I got in the fall and are still healthy, and this is their second summer with chicks, these were new in the spring. I think it is a suburban home. So relatively small risk, but a risk so don't do what I do!!
Only a true chicken person could understand taking time off work to keep an eye on new chickens.

ditto. I have the heated dishes out, just didn't run the electric cord out there. Procrastination is my middle name!

wonder if Ralphie is finally done with his turkey digs - yesterday I drove by this place that always has something going on with animals - they usually have a group of turkekys and ducks and chickens and dogs and cats and occasional ponies, etc in the yard. ANyway, drove by at dusk and the turkeys were up on the ridgeline of the pallet coop they were building. I thought Ralphie would appreciate those turkeys!
