Minnesota!

March 1987
My son was already 6yrs old then.
y'all are in an amazing good mood for such a soggy night!

I got good news today, the guy with the 6 pullets wants to meet me THurs so I can pick them up. I don't know yet whether that is morning or after work - I sure hope I can get them home before dark.

If it is dark when I get them....then.....what am I doing with them Thursday night? I guess I could lock the flock out of half the coop and pop the newbies in there with food and water for a day. But 12 of the flock currently roosts in the back half, so there will be some unhappy hens. Am going to take Friday off work so I can work with integration over the weekend.

I can't wait. There is a a Red Star, a Buff Orpington, a Double Laced Barnvelder, a Dominique, a Plymouth Barred Rock Bantam, and a white Silkie Bantam, all about 7 months old. I am risking not quarantining them , which I would totally advise anyone else not to do, because it is a stupid move. Am doing so because my spare coop has quail in it, and because this family had chicks last year which I got in the fall and are still healthy, and this is their second summer with chicks, these were new in the spring. I think it is a suburban home. So relatively small risk, but a risk so don't do what I do!!
That sounds like a nice mix. I like having different breeds just to mix things up.

ever since I read this yesterday or was it this morning? I've been craving jalopeno corn muffins. I can't get them out of my mind!

Hey everyone

Soggy day but better than snow I'm not ready for that yet.
Where are you Ralphie?
I spent the day making egg rolls, three of us ladies made 120 egg rolls!! they turned out really good :p
OOOOHHH...egg rolls, so good. I may have to make them if I can't get them out of my mind. Some people eat to live, I live to eat!

Yeah I have to home school my 10yo he has as a "slight case" of Autism but he also has 158 IQ school is generally too slow for him
That doesn't surprise me. My godson is on ASD, and when he was young kind of made an engineer look stupid during a children's sermon. I was so proud of him. My grandson is also ASD. Thank goodness my DD is a teacher, he got diagnosed early. She is working to get him into therapy so he will be ready for school.

I have a nephew with full blown autism and his sister probably is somewhat asperger's , she's in college now and aced her physics exam, top of the class. So smart I can't comprehend it, I didn't get algebra.
Now days? I would homeschool, If I had to do it over. Our world is so scary to me.
Homeschooling takes a ton of work & commitment! I couldn't do it. I remember how much work a weekly Sunday school class or Scout meeting were. I see how many hours my DD puts in ALL year round for her classes, not counting grading papers.

I know I thought chickens didn't like rain my girls were outside all day yesterday just getting soaked I bribed them back into their run with some mill worms then after they were all eaten back out in the rain they went...
They have you figured out. Probably headed back out so you would bring them in again with more mealworms! I had 3 girls up at the house today. I was standing at the door watching them in the driveway when I heard little whispers of "Nana are you up?" I peeked down the stairs & grandson, LTL, was coming up the stairs on the outside of the banister. Snagged him off the ledge of the stairs & we watched chicken TV together. What a good start to the day.

We stacked hay bales along the back wall of the chicken coop for extra insulation and to reduce the space a bit. We couldn't figure out why we were only getting an egg a day and only from our olive egger. We looked everywhere we figured they could fit. Here they somehow made it to the very top of the bales and squeezed their way into a small space I didn't even know existed. There was close to 2 dozen eggs up there! The olive egger isn't the most mobile chicken, so we figured she couldn't get up there :) I'm so glad we didn't have to smell them first. Ugh.

My adorable banty Cochin Beatrice has done and gone broody. She sitting on her eggs and growls at me.
So far just two, but they are all hers :) I'd love to see babies.

@aussiegal318

How absolutely adorable, your grandson. The day my daughter stops crawling into my lap when she wakes up will be sad. I'm already losing out to Nikolodean.

Good Morning Minnesota! It's almost 8:00 and it's pitch dark outside and pouring rain here. I left my girls locked in the coop today, didn't even give them a choice. They've got the coop, a covered run and the attached greenhouse though so hopefully they're not too miserable. This will be the first time since the four new girls hatched that I've had them locked up all day, so hopefully they'll be nice to each other! The older girls still bully the young ones around a little, but it doesn't seem to be anything too vicious. Just a little chasing and a peck here and there.

round.

to make life easy, order that molly's herbal wormer . http://www.fiascofarm.com/herbs/mollysherbals.php/categories/herbal-wormer
easy as pie, you just mix the herbs with the feed for three days. and then you can give them a weekly maintenance dose of a different herb blend. I'm kind of lax about that, because I forget. Thanks for reminding me now!

or you can go with a chemical wormer, but you will have egg withdrawa (feed eggs back to flock ) for about 21 days or something because you have to do two doses. Need to worm everyone!

molly's, you don't have any withdrawal time, and it does work. so easy. havent' done fecal float tests afterwards, but know of people who did to double check its effectiveness.

Someone else can tell you which wormers do roundworm, etc.

you know, I know Ralphie has taken a leave of absence here (and is so missed), but he is not the only one who likes to see posts to read in the morning?

where is everybody?

No mallard eggs. My Pekins will lay all winter till February and start again in tye end of march.
Do give them extra light?

I am not even sure if that is possible. I am not saying it isn't, but it would be like amazingly rare. It would kind of be like mating a pig and a sheep. Two different species.
I know, I was just joking because it looked like some people were a little confused!

Not for the squeamish

Found this in chicken poop this morning. I know they are worms, but what kind?

Ewww!! I would freak if I found those!

I use Valbazen, it gets all the worms a chicken can get. I wait until the dead of winter after everybody is done molting and egg production is way down anyway. I think I only had to toss less than a dozen eggs last winter over the 21 day period, but I only had 5 hens at the time.
Of course, if I saw those in their poop I'd be de-worming ASAP. Good luck with whichever route you decide to go! Are any of them acting sick?

I think a few people are taking a break from the thread....
The way I see it, these internet forums are not like reality where you choose your friends and who you like to hang out and chat with. These are wide open to anybody and everybody, so of course there will be differences of opinion. There are very few people on here that I'm not much fond of based solely on the things they say here, but this is just the tiniest glimpse into who they really are. Maybe we'd be great friends if we actually met in person. Maybe not. People just need to learn how to keep on scrolling when they read something they don't like instead of getting all bent out of shape about it. When you get this many people from all different backgrounds and walks of life in one "room" there's bound to be some tension. I guess if it got to the point where the majority of what I was reading was really bothering me I would just stay away, but as long as there are still a lot of great folks on here I'm willing to scroll past the few posts I don't like. That's kind of my outlook in life in general... Focus on the positives and the things you like, don't waste your energy on the negatives, and think before you speak
