They'll be 28 weeks on Thanksgiving.... maybe I'll invite them to dinner.... LOL kidding of course.... Everybody is actually free loading right now

Barred rock, ee, bovan, asian blue....my first winter with chickens. I've had goats for 4 months....they are exiled to the 3 sided porch during the day but go into half the coop at night. The chickens decided the stall wall was a great place to roost.

I love the idea of goats but not the maintenance. I hear with goats that worming is a big problem, and goat people swear by molly's herbals goat wormer. Something to stick away in case you need it!

I can just see the chickens on the goat stall wall, but....a pic is worth a zillion here. bovan and asian blue are totally new to me = perhaps they need heat. your ee and rock for certain don't. Off to look those breeds up!

Edited to add: bovan and asian blue are cool sounding birds. I don't think they need heat either! and again....pictures!

After coming in from trimming a tree and watching a somewhat disappointing first half of the Vikings game I went out to winterize my motorcycle. I put stabilizer in the gas and fired it up to let it draw it into the carbs and corn kernels come shooting out of the exhaust! Those darn mice!!

I would replace the red light with a 100W bulb with a timer giving them extra light. Those are all breeds that should be okay in winter. I hate to see you on the news from a burned down coop.

Okay, I missed the bovan, what is that? It isn't on feathersite list, so wondering if it is a cross of some kind?

Are you giving them extra light? If not, you won't see much for a while. Even if you had lights on, this time of year they aren't as anxious about laying as if it were September. You have such nice digs, I think a 60W bulb would get them laying pretty quick. Look how red their heads are! They are such lovely ladies too, I should find where you got them from. Oh, yeah, it was me!!! LOL

Bovan Brown are some kind of egg layers, a fellow near us was selling them. They produce like crazy for 2 years then burn out. We like the eggs but in the future we will go with heritage breeds. Love the Barred Rocks.

The bulb is a 175 watt bulb...didn't want to put a 250. So even though the poop is frozen solid it's not too cold? Scares me...and I'm a novice.

I think bovans also called bovan browns are a hybrid layer used for commercial brown egg operations. Similar to a red sex link
