Minnesota!

Well, this morning I am pretty convinced chickens are better creatures than I am. They are out in this cold, ankles deep in snow, just loving life. I stood out there for 5 minutes and think I may need to have some toes removed. We got 2 eggs today, two of my freeloading snuggle chickens started laying a week ago at about 33 weeks old. My crested cream legbar lays olive colored eggs...not blue, and my super blue egg layer (ameraucana x leghorn) is now dubbed a barely-blue egg layer. If you squint really hard her eggs are blue, if they still look white, press on your eyeballs really hard and look again ;) It looks like the Jersey will be next. If anyone has any guesses what the cross of this massive 7+ lb hen is, have at it. We were told Swedish flower x blue Orpington. I am thinking blue jersey x eagle x Swedish flower. She is huge, dopey, and the most unique colored chicken I've seen.

Pretty hens! I have a freeloader, too. Well, two of them actually! One is a RIR/Ameraucana, so I'm being patient and my fingers are crossed she'll lay some beautiful blue/green eggs soon. The other one....eh....who knows.

ai yi yi! snow tomorrow, it is never as bad as predicted, but I'm up for about 6 inches.

the little egg is the silkie, the big one is a double yolker. 4 eggs today, perhaps I didn't need to freeze the eggs I did for January!

So far the new hens are doing just fine with the little snow we've had.

Everyone told me to wrap the quail pen on three sides. I didn't. I did the north side. The west side is somewhat protected by the coop. I'm thinking the people advising me to do that were using the cage systems where you stack em up like boxes....but my quail have a big (for quail) coop with hay, so they can definitely get out of the wind and snow. We will see how much snow comes in the run - the roof is covered.

I remembered to get the snow shovels out! Now I just have to dig out winter boots for work. Already have the clodhoppers out.

Hi All im just checking in. ive been pretty busy but havent been doing much with the chickens. feed, water and give them treats. Its so cute they will come right to the back door and all stare in, If the know that i see them they will peek at the glass and let me know they want treats so i usally throw couple handfuls of mealworms out. And when they see me carry out the icecream bucket they will run as fast as they can and follow me in the run to see what I have for them... And the Hen that was in my shower is doing fine other then her bald head she is acting perfect. hopefully she stays that way...

Yeah, The reason I do mine is I didn't care for shoveling out the run on top of everything else that has to be shoveled. hopefully it don't snow too much in there.
