There are so many options. My eyes cross after going through the list. I would like to use all natural preventatives if at all possible but I don't know where to start.

I know I sound like a broken record, but try Molly's herbals. They work for me and other bycers, and at least one person has had the efficacy confirmed by fecal floats following treatment. I highly recommend them. No egg withdrawal either. No worries if your hens are molting, because you can't worm when your hen is in molt, as it damages the feathers coming in. http://fiascofarm.com/herbs/

Nothing here yet.... ours isn't supposed to start until tonight. The latest forecast I saw said 4-6 inches! I'll be glad to get some snow on the ground.

Its coming down here now! Only a inch or two so far. I don't like just seeing cold ground, if its going to be cold, might as well have snow!

It seems like we are right on the edge of snow and sleet. Wish the temp would drop and only snow would fall.

The girls still wanted to be outside today! They rooster in the tree and on the stumps I've hauled into the yard.

Oh thats too bad. Sleet is the absolute worst if there is wind. My geese don't seem to mind the snow, but they have a reason to be outside too. Thousands of canada geese have been flying over the yard very low as they land in the field right next to us, so they enjoy honking to them!

Right now it seems that only Gracie, my SB(LO), is the one hiding in earnest. I've decided when I moved the birds to the chicken palace (hooray we got it insulated yesterday!!! Now just a few more tweaks on the hardware cloth and their enclosure will be complete) that I'm putting him and the other roos in one of the houses outside the enclosure. He bred Gracie this morning and when he finished she literally ran as fast as she could and burrowed up into a hay bale and hid her head. I gave her a bath Saturday -- she still has what looks like to me - to be loose poop -- it's white and sticks constantly to her feathers. Another round of the wazine but I've not seen an actual worm in her poop yet. Anyway I bathed her - just warm water bath in tub - then blew her dry and set her up in a tall bin for the night. I'm dang near tempted to buy a set of chicken diapers and let her stay in the house - but the Doxies would be trying to eat her for lunch..

Any notion on the poop? It's formed like healthy poop - I just can't figure out the poopy butt. No body else has a poopy butt.

I'm paranoid too because Gracie (Rusty, Loretta, and Jade) are the remaining chickens from the batch I got where I lost 4 to roundworm in the brain. Gracie's boyfriend was the last death from it -- he was showing same poopy butt and no amount of worm meds helped - but of course the worms were already in his brain.

I've found a link to poulty medications - just wondering if anyone else has a preferred wormer? Does anyone use copper sulfate? I've read mixed reviews so now I am confused about it.

I've also taken these notes:

Safeguard liquid goat wormer dosage is orally undiluted; 1cc for giants, 3/4cc for large fowl, 1/2cc for standards, 1/4cc for smaller birds. If you dose 3-5 days in a row, discard eggs 14 days after the last dosing. There's no need to redose again 10 days later.

Valbazen dose: 0.5 cc (ml) by mouth for each large fowl bird, 0.25cc for bantams. Dose then Repeat in 10 days. Egg withdrawal is a total of 24 days. It's actually 14 days after each dose, which adds up to 24 days.

Molly's herbal wormer This is a good natural wormer.

Got a call from a neighbor on the way home. says he has one of my chickens, that his dog "found" it in the road. Took forever to get home, ran to the coop. Saw the gate was open. Counted heads in the coop, came up two short. Missing is Seabright, the little white seagull looking hen. And Goldie. Went to the neighbors which is about 1/3 mile down the road. No way in hell that my chickens got that far, they don't even make it to my driveway when they freerange. Neighbor volunteers that his dog has been inside all day and blames some other dog.

Neighbor had Goldie in a box. Got Goldie home, she has major gashes and holes in her. I could get my pointer finger up to the knuckle in them. Mostly stopped bleeding. I packed the wounds with Nu-Stock, which is basically sulphur and tar oil. I've used it on a hen that had deep puncture wounds and a big gash from a hawk. She healed up just fine. I put Goldie in a kennel in the bathroom to keep her warm, quiet, and away from the cats.

I feel both sick that I left the gate open, and really angry that the neighbor lets his dog run.

I am thankful that he at least took the hen from the dog and put it in a box, and called me. He could have just let the dog finish the hen, or not called me. I don't know whether he really believes his dog just "found" my hen on the road, or whether he doesn't want to own up to his dog on my land. THis is the third time I've lost hens these past couple of months to a predator. Probably all of them to his danged dog.

How awful! I hope your Goldie recovers well.
Is there any chance that your Seabright is hunkered down someplace?

I have a neighbor that let's his dog roam around, too. We live on 5 acres, but it's more wide than long. During this time of year, we can see through the trees and have watched him let his dog out who then ventures right onto our property, sniffs around for awhile, takes a crap or two, and prances on back. I can't imagine he really thinks his dog just hangs out on his property. A few times, we've let our dog out on purpose (we have a 120lb Rottweiler) and he calls his right back in. So, we know he's paying some attention. Plain disrespectful. I'm waiting for the day his dog sees our chickens running around....makes me mad thinking about it. In the Spring, I think we'll run a non-permanent fence on the back property line just to keep his dog out.

It sounds like his dog may have got his teeth in her and carried her "home". Hopefully she's okay and your other girl shows up somewhere unharmed. Like you said, it is nice he gave you a call. Hopefully, he'll realize he needs to keep better track of his dog.
