1. Good to hear that Goldie is perking up. You are doing such a great job with her!
2. Crawling mealworms? The ones I buy are dead, I hope.
the dead ones are usually from china and reportedly have a high arsenic content. on the other hand, no one I know has had a chicken die from them. The crawly ones are good for recalcitrant eaters, like goldie. It is the wiggly movement that gets them to eat. very gross
Well I seen my hawk today looked it up it is a red tailed hawk. It is a big one it looks to be about 2 1/2 feet tall. It was sitting in the tree right above the chicken coop. I tried scaring it away by yelling at it and flapping my arms that did no good so I picked up a rock and threw it at it, it finally flew away. But it only flew to the neighbors top of the garage so I threw another rock at it. And it just flew to another tree. That dang bird would NOT go away.. So my hens are on permanent lockdown and my dogs are not allowed to go outside without supervision which makes it inconvenient..
I'm glad you saw the hawk. It will stay around for awhile, unfortunately. I have put up about 6 windjammery things. There was an old farmer at the flea market who would make them - just a vane made out of a flatten tin can , and one spinner thingy. Hawks don't like moving things, of course if there is no wind, they don't bother them! It is very inconvenient to have a hawk hanging around. or a neighbors dog...
Hi Everybody!
MinnesotaNice, the chicks are doing great, went out to check on them this morning and they were all running to the door to be pet. How are the hens? After I traded with you I went to the feed store to get some grower feed and got bit by an Irish Wolfhound. He didn't puncture anything badly but I have a g on my wrist. Mom made me go to the doc and nothing is broken but I have some nerve and tendon damagee and won't be use that hand for much for awhile. He just had to bite my dominant arm
. I'm thinking of raising some of my own chicken feed and read somewhere on here about raising guppies, minnows, and duckweed as a supplement for chickens. Anyone else heard of or did it? I was also thinking about aquatic snails and crickets.
thats awful, hope it gets better soon....if you learn about how to raise guppies or minnows, let me know. I would like to learn!
Waiting for those pictures Lala. So glad she is looking so much better!
yuck. No pics tonight, I got delayed at work and only had a short time with her before I turned out the lights. She flew up to the top of the kennel and I took the opportunity to give her a good looking over and I can not believe she is still alive. Those are very deep and very bad wounds, - in good shape, but....somehow I didn't let myself really see how serious they are.
Still not a good eater, but thanks to cluckie's suggestion (am I remembering right?), she ate enough meal worms yesterday to have a good number of droppings today. that's a relief. I'm going to order some from
Amazon, twice as many at half the price.
She was very active tonight, happy to come out of the coop, walk around, fly up to the top of the kennel...not so happy with me forcing her head into yogurt. I'm like, " you are going to eat, gx3d da727$%. She probably shook more yogurt off on my walls than she got in her, but...every little morsel counts. Trouble is, she was so happy to be out that she didn't have much interest in more mealworms - she ate the ones I left for her today.
Very alert, very curious about what was in the bathroom - looking everywhere. I will move her to the coop tomorrow morning but still keep her in the kennel. I am lucky that it is so mild out!
