Minnesota!

y'all are pretty quiet this morning! but then, everyone is busy at holiday times. I like that just about everyone has a holiday sometime around this time of the year. We all get to be festive together!

Goldie update Day 17: ugh. I shooed the girls out of that part of the coop and opened Goldie's cage. It took her a while to decide to come out, and she didn't go far. Eyed the roosts, and tried to get to one that is almost 6'. She got about 4 feet in the air and didn't make it. Hasn't used her wings in more than 2 weeks, and those muscle injuries....She settled into the hay, so I took the chance to clean her kennel while she was resting. replaced the soiled grass with fresh dried grass. Thankful that I dried some this summer from mowing, it is perfect for her. Hay would be too pokey, shavings would stick to wounds....towels look gross in 3 minutes. So dried grass, I'm never going to be without it now.

she came over to watch while I was cleaning the kennel. Probably only walked five feet the whole time she was out. I inspected her wounds, she struggled like crazy. She has some new feather quills growning in bare skin. There are some scabs coming loose. I think one of the huge puncture wounds has too much nustock packed into it, it is almost like a cast. The wound is kind of bulging out so I am going to bathe her later today and see if I can get that to loosen up and come out. No heat, no drainage, but her feathers near the big packed wound look a little greasy, almost wet. It could be the nustock coming out, since I had poured the oily part right into the wound. The nustock on top maybe formed a cap or plug....

She will not be out of the kennel by xmas, that is for certain.

She was exhausted from struggling to get loose, and didn't move when I released her. But, no panting (indicates pain).

So clearly, she has a long ways to go still.

About mealworms: the cardboard envelope was delivered yesterday. I've read the worms are in newspaper in the envelope and I haven't opened it yet. Don't know what to do with them once they are opened. I have a little wheat bran from the current mealworm batch....should have researched this first. What the heck are they going to go into?

You could put them in a Rubbermaid type tub if you don't have enough wheat bran use oatmeal.

erlibird, thanks for the idea about oatmeal, I have plenty of that. I could even grind it a little so it isnt so big.

funny enough, I just got up the gumption to open the envelope ever so c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y anticipating worms everywhere, when out come some.........socks! Not the mealworm delivery!

Well we're finally getting some snow! There was about 2" at my house when I left for work this morning and I just got word now at lunch time that it's up to 7"! It's still coming down heavy here at work, but I'm 35 miles from home. The schools got let out by 11:00, I'm going to try to get out early too so I can make my treacherous commute in the daylight.

I am so jealous! We got about 4.5 flakes and then nothing! The ground isn't even froze here :(

Our ground isn't frozen yet either, which will make for some messy plowing.....
