Yes very much agreed! Or vice versa! You never know what one flock could have become naturally resistant to that another's flock would be demolished by.

Stop worrying, it takes years off your life! The chickens will be fine. If you did all that we talked about earlier on, they will make it through just fine.
Having chickens your first winter is like having that first baby...
you worry about every little cough and everything going into its mouth and about every germ, then the second one, you relax a little and don't fuss quite so much. By the third kid, the pacifier could drop in dog poop and you just wipe it off and stick it back in their mouth. Okay, just kidding on the dog poop part, but I think you know what I mean
My friend and neighbor stopped by and we stood in the barn chatting and he laughed and laughed at my worries. I'm not so worried now...

It is hard when you first start, as Minniechickmama says, and then when you can read so many southerners on byc who are heating their coop when it hits 40 degrees above zero...:_
I get to let Goldie out for some activity time after she has her mealworm breakfast. Need to see how she moves, if she can get up to roosts, if she has any stamina. If she does ok, I will probably leave her shut up in half the coop so she can get some exercise.
There is a tiny chance that she will get to join the flock in a few days. she has been eating a bit of regular feed these last few days after she has demolished the kale and apple and nothing is left. This isn't eating much based on the size of her droppings

Many, many houseplants, yes. Just propogated a Weeping Fig and a couple of African Violets. Do your kittens nibble on the fern?

I keep my fern at work on my desk, but it is a propagation of one from my mom and I remember our cats eating it when I was a kid

Has anyone ever switched from regular water bowls to the suspended nipple kind? I'd like to offer that as an option and see if they take to it.

Speaking of cats... My kittens are moving outside this weekend. They get a nice corner of my insulated shop, an insulated kitten igloo and a cat flap! I'm nervous for them as they have not been outside since they were 2 weeks old
Klopklop, are you going to try to keep them sort of corralled for a few days so they get used to the new quarters? I would be nervous too......what if they wander off because it is all so new to them? are they like chickens and need to learn where "home" is?
Goldie was sooo happy to be out of her kennel. She explored the coop, managed to hop up a 24' bench and from there on to a roost where she groomed and groomed and groomed. Has pinfeathers everywhere. I cut off some dead skin. she is a bit unsteady on her feet, and takes a very long time to consider whether she can make a small jump, say 2 inches down.....but given she has been hardly moving for 3 weeks, thats not bad.
Definitely looks injured, the way her one wing kind of hangs down still from the shoulder, but her wounds are dry and clean. Lots of scar tissue on one....still has nustock cemented to some holes, but I think it is ok.
One of the other hens wanted to nibble on her. I would do a saddle but there are zillions of pinfeathers and I bet it would bother her.
She is not ready to be out with the flock yet, but I can give her more room for a couple of days and maybe she can go with the flock next week after she builds up some muscle tone and if I can figure out how to protect her wounds and pinfeathers - blue kote won't help with the pinfeathers .....
