Minnesota!

Tony is a danged good looking cat. And Scandia, that looks like one heck of a big garden!

Minniechickmama, all those little puffballs! I so wish you were closer.

Didn't make much progress on the danged hoop coop today. Had to help out a neighbor with an emergency, but I did make it to the feed mill for grit, oyster, grower...18%. Got to go look up chick feed and see if that is an ok protein. Probably will work, it is a duck goose chick mix.

Also cleaned the little pens the two mamas are in, and dug up some more dirt for their dust baths. They really want out, but it will have to wait until next thursday. THen I can supervise. And before that, I have some areas in the coop that are chick traps, and I have to get out the screening and block them off.

Because it was going to freeze last night, I picked a bunch of lilacs, and woke up at 3 am to the sound of a vase crashing to the floor. smithereens! took me about an hour to clean up all the little glass shards and the books that the water spilled on, and by then I was awake. So now it is not even 7 and I'm ready for bed!

Do you know anyone heading my way? I am just off Hwy 52 about 5 minutes ;)

18% is fine. It is better to use 20 or more, but in a pinch that will do fine. I used to us a duck and goose formula a few years ago because I wanted to avoid the medicated feed. Now I use the 18% as a grow out feed, in fact just picked up 3 bags of it today to start feeding the juvies who have been moved out of the brooder house. I change over at about 3 months of age until they reach POL, then I may keep the cockerels on the 18 and put the pullets on the 16% Layer formula. It depends though, those males I feed the 18 are the ones I think are looking promising, all others get the less expensive layer.

I love bringing lilacs in! However, my house is too much of a mess right now to even think of doing that. I would be like putting pearls on a pig. LOL!

I did go pull some weeds in the garlic with Hubby tonight and we put more straw on it to mulch, it looks amazing!!!! What a difference you can see in the one variety compared to the others. The one that isn't looking as good is called Killarney Red. It is the variety that DH started with back about 15-years ago until it got hit with fusirium and we switch to others. We will just eat all of that stuff this year or sell some of it. I do love the bigger varieties like Georgia Fire and German Extra Hardy, big cloves with a really nice bite.

Did I mention we are trying to grow artichokes this year. We tried them one other year, but they never got mature enough, but where we are putting them this year, we can easily put a hoop over them and keep them going longer in the season to get a bud from them. They are basically thistle plants! Prickly darned things!

artichokes! what fun.

I've got three kinds of garlic this year, german white, armenian, and chisnook. And this year, I actually managed to keep the little drawing of what is planted where in the rows. Now, just to keep them separate at harvest time. hard to believe that will be in just a few weeks.

oh oh, just saw a fox romping through my meadow.

minniechickmama, the one chick with her mama will be ok, right? THey will be able to be with the flock pretty soon, since they are on a ground level tiny coop in the big run. The other mamas, I'm holding back in their cages because they are in the trailer coop, and the ramp is something to navigate. I'm hoping to let them loose on thursday, one day in the coop maybe, and then the great outdoors (ok, just the run).

I dug up some jack in the pulpit and some trillium and moved them to a garden by the house. still haven't planted anything in the veggie garden. had a hard frost last night..

Ok, today is the big get 'er done day for the hoop coop. wish me an uninterrupted day!

We tried the artichokes before but they didn't have time to send up the globes, or whatever you want to call them. They are supposed to be perennial, IF we can mulch and protect them well enough. Where we are putting them, we should be able to put a small hoop over to give them some added comfort.
I don't see why having just one chick with the hen is going to be a problem as long as she keeps it safe and warm. I was just teasing because I have to get rid of some of these birds I have growing faster than I can keep up with them to house them in different spots. They will be fine, but I surely do not need them all.

Hi everyone - busy, busy, busy... Hope everyone is well!

This is my problem. I try explaining it to DH and he just doesn't get it. I'm stealing this by the way! Lol

A friend of mine is looking for duck eggs to hatch. Anyone have some?
Quote:
Cyrus's daughter #3 Abigail Rose, arrived 25 April. Looks just like her papa!

I can set you up with some Muscovy eggs if your friend would be interested in those? Right now, I don't mark the eggs from certain hens, but Caesar has been getting busy with all of them :) It'll be a variety pack of possibly barred ducklings and mostly chocolate, lilac, and buff colors. Possibly blue thrown in there. PM me if interested.

Great news! They're a very nice family.

Ya know, I can get chicks for you @lalaland and when I head up to Grand Rapids Memorial Weekend, you can meet me in Mora. You should probably get at least 24 for warmth and socialization purposes. I'm just doing my part to help out my fellow BYCers. Lol

I've the 6 chicks in the coop, the lone chick with her mama in the little coop, and another went broody today, plus the 25 meat girls coming in a few weeks, and 25 grownups! I have eggs coming out my ears, and I am almost hoping that every single chick that has hatched is a rooster .

Great news! I have been doing a hatching project with the local school for kindergarten and second grade and the eggs are hatching! One is out of the egg and one is pipped. 10 more to go

cool! and are your broodies still setting?

please no frost tonight again....
