Minnesota!

Just a note to us Minnesotans.... I posted a link to the 2011 swap dates on www.bcppa.com. If you have any to add to that list, please just drop me an e-mail with any info. As soon as the show secretary gets me the results, I will post all winners from our fall classic poultry show too.

Firing up the good old incubator this next week too. Lots of silkie and bantam faverolle eggs going in there. Keeping some back for my own fall show string, but will take local orders for chicks too. Any pet quality youngsters will be sold at discounted prices to move them asap. Due to the climate up here, these will be pick-up only or I can meet at the swaps too. Amy

GLW are working out for us pretty well here in Northren MN. The peacombs dont get all frostbit like my sinlge comb breeds, and the GLW seem to be the fattest/most well feathered other than my cochins. They dont lay the biggest eggs, but they lay a lot of medium sized light brown eggs. However, i find that my GLW are the crankiest of the breeds that I have, other than the RIR. We mixed our BO roo with GLW hens this spring and the outcome are beautiful, mild mannered, hefty birds. They wont lay till next yr but they are a warm caramel color with really small/faint black lacing on the ends of their feathers, you cant see it till you're close. So far females come out single comb and roos come out peacomb.

Sparkles, that is very interesting. I have a huge Blue Orp Roo and 7 BLRW hens. Maybe I should hatch out some of those eggs. Sounds like a good mix. I do have a BLRW roo, but # 5 ( the Orp's name), never gives him a chance to breed anything.

The only problem is I never get home from work in time to collect the eggs before they freeze. Still working on that one.

DH decided that they were his dream birds, so we just tried a few. NOT that I give a hoot about genetics and breeding, but I do find them to be nice birds

Morning all ! Got about 10 -12 inches of snow down here near Rochester. I haven't even trudged out to let chickens out yet. DH plows in town and has been out all night. Still out. So,I'm not plowed out yet.
