Miracle- Hello! guinea/chicken crossbreed

Tortoishelled calicos are the primarily brown cats with splotches of black, white, & tan like your Esmerelda.

Then you have the primarly white calico cats with splotches of black, tan, & brown.

Calicos are almost always going to be female cats, as males are extremely rare and usually infertile.

Enough about cats. I'm addicted to Miracle stories, and if I don't read a new one soon, it won't be pretty. I think I need a scratching post. Mena please write some more.

I'm glad to know that tortie cats have a reputation. Mine is the youngest and smallest in a four cat, two dog household, but she is the DIVA! No doubt about it.

Tortoiseshells are extremely similar to calicos. The biggest difference is that torties have "streaks" of color intermingled (similar to brindle in dogs) whereas calicos have large, distinct blotches or patches of color. Also, while calicos always include white, torties can be tortie and white or just tortoiseshell with no white markings. Both colors are sex linked, meaning they are almost always female because the color requires two x-chromosomes (the rare male that pops up is almost always xxy and as a result infertile). Both colors also have a tendency to be a bit towards the "temperamental" side, although torties are especially notorious. I work at a vet clinic, and whenever one starts screaming at us and trying to eat us we always say, "well, she is a tortie after all."
