Mislabeled Tractor Supply/Feed Store Chicks

I payed 10$ for a cuckoo mar and hen, and ended up getting a very mean barred rock rooster. I was very happy to give him away, and ended up finding a solution. Check the sales board because sometime people will be selling chickens and pin it up there, you might have some luck like I did. Good luck!

It's best to walk in knowing something about the breeds they are supposed to be, and make better choices because of having better knowledge. Here, it's not rare for the 'pullet bins' to include cockerels, and for birds to land in the wrong bin. It's better than a few years ago, because the chicks are now fenced off from the customers, so only staff handles them.
Safer for everyone too.

I bought a dz BLRWs pullets that turned out to be Barred Rocks. When I called the Mgr 3 weeks later she said just come pick out another dz. When I got there she said they were out of the Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (they never had any), so just pick out any I wanted. Wound up getting a dz "Ameraucanas" (EEs) and it would be my luck that out of the dozen, ever dang one was roosters except for 2, and I'm beginning to wonder about those 2.

My TSC had a tub filled with black stars, but they were labeled "Black Hoovers" so I was like "What on earth is that? I've never heard of them" and the TSC people were convinced that's their real name. It wasn't until after I bought them and they grew up I discovered they were Black STARS which TSC bought from HOOVER hatchery :lau

Then they threw in 2 chicks which they had no info on  to this day I've got no clue what they are.

They've got purple skin and lay brown eggs. 4 toes.

She is so pretty! Surely with purple skin must have some sort of Silkie mix as they are the only black skinned birds I know of??? Have you tried posting to see if anyone know what they are?
That's pretty much all BYC could come up with, I did make a post with a few more pictures when I first joined, nobody had any similar breeds so we all just guessed silkie mix. :) She is a full sized chicken, but it could still be a silkie in there a few generations ago.

I just called my local TSC, and the girl said they had (get this) Genuine Dominiques! More than likely they are just Barred Rocks. A friend works there and told me that when the chicks come in, there is nothing on the paperwork or in the box that tells what breed they are. They are supposed to look at a book in the office and try their best to guess the breed. They mostly get it right, but some times they really screw the pooch.

They got me real good once when they sold BRs as Blue Laced Red Wyandottes!
