This was giving me fits yesterday. I have no problem with resizing and uploading, but just couldn't get the upload to take. What I found was that my browser cache was continually showing the old avatar. After 30 minutes of fiddling with it, I finally cleared my browser cache and realized that my upload had probably worked the first time, my browser just wasn't showing it properly.
