Never heard of gotton until this thread. Gotten, yes. UK throws "u" in all kinds of places we don't, as in colour, Saviour, behaviour, etc. Shrug. Is why I say we don't speak English, we speak American. I think after 200 years we ought to admit we speak our own language!

(Giggles) all these years I've differentiated my speech with the disclaimer, (note finger quotes)"the Queen's English." After all, I will usually slip into a posh accent during said point of reference.

It needs to be day old mashed potato to really hit the spot. I've done it with boiled potatoes, but the milk and better usually added to mashed potatoes is missing and this makes a difference to the taste.

I unintentionally found out that gravy on french fries is really good too.

There is a dish called "poutine," which originated in Quebec. French fries with cheese curds and gravy.

I'm going to try that. I've only ever used boiled potatoes as left over mashed potatoes get turned into fried potato cakes.

I, too, have heard that Americans say "gotten" while the English generally say "got" to mean the same thing.
