Mister or Miss?

Here is an update for you all.lol. He tried to mount one of the hens today, she was out of his league though, a fancy Wyandotte pullet!
He isn't very good at it i will admit, he came up to her side and grabbed the back of her head then attempted to jump on her but just fell over and ran off in embarrassment:lau .

I'm not really sure what to do with him now, I can in theory have a rooster but we are good friends with our neighbors and they are not keen on a rooster cowing before at least 6:30 of a morning. Is there any way I can train him not to crow or is it an inevitable thing that will happen? He is my very first hatched and raised chick so wouldn't be to keen on giving him away.

Their first attempts at mating are pretty pitiful (and hilarious :gig ). You wont be able to keep him from crowing, but there are some things you can do to keep your neighbors happy. You can black out your coop for example. Put curtains over the windows and any other places light comes in. They'll sleep longer which will keep him from crowing early. My rooster seems to like to give a few good crows first thing in the morning (but my neighbors could care less about whether I want to sleep in so I do them the same kindness. If their 4 dogs can bark, my rooster can crow). You could also make him a special box to sleep in. Put him in their in the evenings and let him out in the morning. Bribing your neighbors with some fresh eggs would probably keep them happy as well ;)
Good luck!
Nikki

:goodpost: I have heard you can fix them not to crow!

Thanks nikkie. I put my last rooster in a box but that did not work he was still just as loud. I have a whole new coop up now and it is much darker so i will see if it works. I heard if the rooster is in a cage that he can stand up in but he cant stretch his neck up he wont be able to crow.
Chuck, I would rather give him away then "fix him", it is horrible and most people say it doesn't work and the chicken can die in the surgery.

Oh, I didn't even know that was possible! I just thought it was a myth or something. Poor chickens! You have a really pretty bird!!!!

Hi i dont have a rooster but I do want one so I have done research on them and their are tricks to keep the noise level down first of all the cage darkness trick but also prevent him from being bored roosters crow when bored from what I have heard so keep them occupied maby tie a corn nob to some string and hang it up that will keep him busy so little things like they will hopefully help :) good luck and by the way he looks beautiful
