Mite/Lice Infestation, cant seem to get rid of it

Quote:
I found a TEEEENY tiny container of it at Home Depot for about $6. But I get mine from my farm store in the large cannister for $10 too.

Yes you're right, I saw them at a local hardware store for about the same price. I think they are about 1 pound containers. I wish our feed store carried sevin, heck, they have just about everything else. Lucky you lol.

So I put the Ivermectin on them and placed a white paper towel down to see how many mites fell off. There were hardly any... and the ones that were on the paper towel were crawling around alive. Are the mites supposed to die right away?

You guys are lucky you can buy Sevin. They took it off the shelves here in CA and I can't get it anymore. Calif. says it has "cancerous causing chemicals" in it so it was banned. I used to use it all the time for dusting dog beds for fleas, etc. I noticed a little pullet today was acting strange and checked her over and she has white mites or lice all around her vent!! First time dealing with this. I'll get the pour on Ivermetrium but don't know what to do for dusting now....

Alot of people prefer to not use Sevin, actually, and use Poultry and Garden dust instead. Active ingredient is Permethrin. I use a cut off leg of panty hose, or a knee-hi ... put the dust in it and use it like a powder puff.

Hi Hannah, you're not alone. Don't think you're a bad chicken mom. This has been a very bad year for mites and lice. I had some of my best birds die from them before I even knew they had them. They can be very hard to see until they are heavily infested. I have been fighting mites & lice all year. I lost my fav. cochin roo and my 2 best Silkie hens to them. Fine one day, dead the next. We just need to be very vigilant in checking for them. I use a magnifying glass, my eyes are getting bad. So don't feel bad, just get those bugs off of them before they suck all their blood & kill them.

Haven't seen anyone mention using wood ash for dust baths and Juniper buds in the nest boxes and litter. Another Old-Timer remedy is to put used motor oil on the roost perches. (Worked for Grandma and works for me)
