Congratulations, you will fall in love with them,i love my silkies,i call them my little smurfs.

I also think my one chicken has mites. Not sure though because I had left them in the coop one day because it was below zero with even lower wind chills and the next day I noticed she was missing feathers. So I'm also thinking they ganged up on her while all stuck inside. Here are some pictures to look at.

Hi ive used DE before and it does work, but very slowly. Ive found it dosnt kill the lice eggs though. Not wanting to use chemicals on my chickens i stumbled upon a 99% natural product called "douse that louse".

It killed all the lice and the eggs in 20 minuets! And I didnt see a louse on my chickens for a few weeks. Im so impressed im telling everyone about it now.

They also do a product specificly for mites called smite that mite

hope this helps

What did you treat the inside of your coop and nests with?

At the time i used dtl, and it did knock the red mite numbers down significantly, i sprayed every other night directly on any mite i could see, and in all the cracks. i also used DE on alternative nights. But www.backtotheland.co.uk has just released another more stronger version specificly for red & scaly mite.
