Chapter 16

-Alastair's Perspective-

Somethings not right. What could it be? I'll survey the mares, it'll get my mind off my problems... Hmmm, Ruby, Ebony, Rain, Eliza, Althea....hm, hm. Where's Mitty and Agnes? Shoot! Those bad girls, where could they be? There's no way I'm leaving the rest of the mares alone and vulnerable...but, they are barely a year old. How could I leave them to possibly die? Alastair! Your duty as a stallion is to find them. Come on, don't be a wimp. They are part of your herd. YOUR herd, not someone elses!
Alastair, now determined, set off at a spanking trot towards the grove. He sensed that they went that way, he soon picked up their scent. He looked back at his herd with a worried glance and set off through the grove. The happy atmosphere that Mitty had experienced 3 hours earlier was not the same for Alastair, the chattering birds angered him, the singing breeze seemed evil to him. His day was darkened at the thought of losing Mitty and Agnes. They were always good girls. Naughty and testy though. But I suppose I was being a beast, snapping at them...too preoccupied. Mother always said I should watch for that, I should've listened.
As the woods got denser and Mitty's scent became clearer he was increasingly worried. She wondered into the pines!?! That moronic mare! He stopped completely when the menacing pines stood before him, but what really made him stop was the scent of danger. She's beyond my help now. I didn't want it to come to this....but I suppose I'll have to. It's for the best.
With those thoughts he left the edge fo the forest and cantered through the grove. Upon returning to the herd, every mare was safely grazing or talking. The younger ones were playing and exploring.
But he returned on his grassy hill, deep in his plan of rescuing Mitty and Agnes!
