Mitty - The horse story

You are a great writer and don't feel pressured by us, we just really love your story and some people post a little out of hand at times.

Chapter 39

The evening light faded slowly in the horizon. I was still jumpy and frightened; earlier a man tried to put some sort of disgusting paste on my wounds…he was well repaid with a kick in the stomach. After that they left me alone…completely alone. No horses to talk to, no grass, no water. Just a tight lead rope. How I wished for Alastair's comforting presence and warm side! How I ached for my friend, Agnes, and how I wondered about the filly. Did she find the herd? I silently mused, Or perhaps she got hurt by a wild animal! Maybe another herd found her and the stallion took her for his own? Oh, I wish I knew. And I wonder why Alastair isn't coming for me…maybe he forgot about me, he probably decided it wasn't worth the risk of getting caught by those humans. Infernal creatures! I seethed angrily. I was fighting the temptation to give up entirely; who knew if I'd ever see the wilds again? Alastair, the filly, and even Agnes - yes, Agnes had abandoned me. What were the chances that I'd ever escape? Little to none.
I was snapped out of my reverie by a crunching noise..drawing closer, and closer. My skin prickled…what was it?
"Mitty?" A familiar voice whispered. Something in the back of my mind nagged at me, where have I heard that familiar voice before?
"H-hello?" My voice was shaky, "W-who i-is it?"
A sleek chestnut body stepped out from behind the bush - Lune! "Hey," He grinned like a colt, "Your in a fix aren't you?"
Anger rushed to my head, "Lune! What are you doing here? I thought you disappeared into the forest with Mourir." I started breathing heavily, he abandoned me when I needed him! Suddenly a new thought entered my head, 'But that's been so long ago, months even, your still mad?' Of course I am! Why wouldn't I be mad? 'Love is stronger than hate, your letting yourself being held down by something of the past. Perhaps it's time to let go.' I shook my head, annoyed at those disturbing thoughts…but maybe Lune was trying to be friendly? I shouldn't trust him. I finally decided.
"Mitty?" He repeated, "Hello?" His brown eyes looked into mine, they were nice.
I blinked, "Sorry, now can you loosen these ropes or something?"
Lune was at my side studying the rope and the stake, he kicked at the stake then gnawed at the rope in vain.
"You won't loosen her that way," A voice stated behind us. It was the mare that loosened the fillies rope earlier! "Let me help," She walked forward, giving Lune a cheeky look; then she played with the knot for ten minutes and it loosened from around my neck, oh!
"If I never have a rope on my again I'll be a happy mare." I shook my body from head to hoof. When I looked up, Lune had one eye on me and one eye on her, I was curious to what he was thinking.

SO sorry it's short! Will write more if I can tomorrow.

"If I never have a rope on my again I'll be a happy mare." I shook my body from head to hoof. When I looked up, Lune had one eye on me and one eye on her, I was curious to what he was thinking. But quickly my thoughts were torn from Lune because there was a stirring among where the humans laid down. Me, Lune, and the mare (whom I later learned was named Rachel) stood stock still. I hardly dared to breathe, if one of the humans happened to see us three, then it would risk a long chase. Especially since Rachel was one of their mares. Lune took a step back, but misjudging where he placed his hoof, a large crack erupted! Lune spooked, he lunged forward, piercing the night with a chilling scream. Rachel and me panicked immediately; I reared and bumped into her, she was thrown to the ground but quickly rolled up to her feet. I looked at her and we both realized that Lune nearly trampled a human in his sleep! The men were everywhere yelling and shouting, grabbing halters and ropes. Silhouetted by the moon, I saw Lune rear, he was magnificent, his rippling muscle outlined like a fine carving. His slim neck was arched and a flowing chestnut mane blew behind it in the midnight breeze, his tail was low set and draping beautifully on the gourd behind him. For a second, that was all that me and Rachel saw, we heard nothing else, saw nothing else, smelt nothing else, all we could feel was the beauty of that stallion radiating outward. My spirits soared over the wild, dark plain; my wildness came out in one fiery feeling, I loved everything about the wild, never would I submit or become tame! My hooves were meant to eat up miles of terrain, my eyes were meant to sweep valleys and mountains, and spark with a wild fire that could never be extinguished; my long, dark tail was meant to whip through the wild sky, trailing behind me in a wave. My head, though nothing like the Arab, was roman nosed and saucy, no, I would never be tame, never would I lower my head to submit to a jiggling bit and a strong leg, never, ever. My sole purpose was to run with the wind and rejoice in my freedom, fearless, confident, and forever untamed. Whether I was caught or not, forever would I be a wild horse.
In that burst of patriotism for freedom, I reared and nearly trampled a human, I whinnied with a twang of rage.
"Luuunnneee!"
I caught his eye, he whinnied back, "Hurry! You and Rachel jump across the creek, I'll follow!"
I wheeled back toward Rachel, who evidently bit her master, I looked across and his shoulder was sopping in blood and he was making loud, guttural noises. I shuddered, Such horrible noises that these humans are capable of.
"Rachel!" I knickered, "Let's hurry across the creek,"
"What about Lune?" Her ears went back a little.
"He will follow, now hurry." I pleaded, a little desperate. I whipped around and cantered, tail up (I only have my tail up when I feel extra frisky), and head high. I reached the edge of the incline, I took a deep breath and sprang for all I was worth! I outstretched my forelegs and hit the hill on the other side beautifully. My hindsight noticed Rachel following, I noticed how pretty of a jumper she was.
I scrambled to the top of the bank, which was hard because the leaves were slippery and I kept snapping twigs. I reached the top and Rachel was nearly beside me, she glanced at me edgily. I realized this was probably her first time out of the humans reach. Quickly I erased those thoughts as I saw Lune gallop towards the bank, gather his haunches, then make a beautiful leap to the other side.
I nudged Rachel, "C'mon! Let's go over to Lune." She nodded and we both cantered over to the stallion, whom I realized was over a year old and no longer a colt. Now he was rather handsome; I turned my head away, hiding the color that crept to my cheeks. Lune stamped impatiently, "Let's go, girls,"
He set off at a strong canter and we both followed. As we were cantering I noticed Rachel was rather sullen.
"What's wrong, Rachel?" I asked, glancing at her.
She sighed, "I just realized that I'm wild and free now. I can do what I want, but I left my mother behind..she cannot do what she wants, she is a broodmare and stays in a stable all the time. When she finds out I escaped she'll be happy for me…but I hoped that she'd be able to be wild just once before she dies."
My heart ached, "I have only a couple memories of my mother," I replied quietly.
Lune dropped down to a trot, "We can cool ourselves out for a bit, girls," He stated.
We trotted, then walked. After awhile a thought hit me, "Lune, where are you taking us?"
"What do you mean? Were wild horses, we go everywhere now." He winked at me.
I stopped dead in my tracks, "You mean you won't take me to my herd?"
Lune laughed, a little cruelly, "Aw, you can forget about them, I'm your new stallion."
