Thank you! We think they are too, even though they have outgrown their soft yellow fuzz. Can't wait to see how they look when they are grown.

I have a little chipmunk chick I'm really curious to see the final colors on.

About 2 days old, in the background on the left and the photo on the right.

2 days old

3 weeks old, starting to get a multi-colored barred look to him/her but neither of the parents are barred so the mystery deepens :)

Wow! It looks just like my three do. They had that "chipmunk" look and now they are getting a cool looking barred pattern like that. What breed is your rooster?

Mine are "guess my parents" :) I have 3 roosters in the flock, a Jubilee/Buff Orpington cross who , a mix breed that was sold to me as a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte but ended up looking like a New Hampshire, and a black Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. I doubt he is the father though as he is low rooster on the totem pole and I've never seen him actually get to breed a hen, the other two chase him off.

Possible moms are Production Red or Jubilee/Buff Orp. I have other hens in the flock but I know they aren't the mom due to chick color, age, etc.

The Roosters

Jubi (Jubilee/Buff)

Muttly (??? maybe 1/2 BLRW)

What breed(s) do you think the parents are on your chicks?

No clue who the mothers might be, but I am nearly certain that the father is our welsummer rooster. Our flock consists of RIRs, black Australorps, partridge rocks, a couple of Delawares and two no-name easter eggers. At least one chick hatched from an easter egg, the other two eggs were light brown, not sure if they came from one of our Rocks or a delaware.

They sure are getting big! These two pics were taken today, 28 days after hatch.

There they are following "momma". Even the lighter collored oddball in the foreground is developing a barred pattern. 12 of their brothers and sisters are currently cooking in my incubator, due to hatch on new years day.

Just fyi, that isn't a barring pattern. Barred chicks are easy to spot at hatch, they all have a white or cream colored spot on the head. What you're seeing is juvenile plumage of a partridge or quail colored bird, they look kinda barred at this age but it's not true barring. With the Wellie roo, the partridge rock hens, and even the EE (depending on what color they are) you have big chances of getting partridge-ish colored birds.

That would be cool, I'm a fan of the partridge color :)

Says who? Wildtype Females(e+/e+) or e+/eWh females or e+/eb with Barring dont white headspot... this is seen on many Autosexing breeds, the Rhodebar, the Welbar, the hambar... here the Rhodebar, Autosexing breed, all of them have barrring, yet the females are wildtype and lack a headspot

not saying that they carry sexlinked barring, but I wanted to clear that up(that e+/ females can lack headspot)

Cool, I didn't know that! I thought all barring causes a head spot. Haven't looked into the autosexing breeds much, but may have to start dipping my toe in that gene pool now.

But, I"m still pretty sure the birds in question aren't barred. Folks often think that pattern is barring when it isn't.

I have sume 'mutts' in the bator and a few of these under the broody right now- just wondering if anyone has these mixes and can share a few pics?
