Mixing Quail with Another Breed

When I had only one bantam chicken hatch I raised it with quail chicks. It was not outcast at all but that was one psychotic chicken. It tried to copy quail noises and their tendency to bolt upward. If you picked it up it would panic and start panting. It never roosted or mixed properly with other chickens. It was killed in a dog attack while the rest of the hens ran together to the coop.

I'd say crossing a quail and a chicken is possible. For example with size differences, and is possible. My large fowl silkie mates with my mom's miniature old english game bantam alot, and she is the size of a quail. I'll post photo sometime. I call my mother's old english game bantam a pocket chicken because she is so tiny. Here's a quick fact: Quail are Galliformes, and pheasindae in their classification which are chickens.

Mating and breeding are not the same thing. For it to be a successful breeding, it has to fertilize the eggs. It's also not something that should be encouraged, hybrids are almost always sterile and often have severe health problems.

Here's my Large Fowl Silkie beside my mom's Old English game bantam. They're good breeders. Breeding and mating are the same thing. Look it up in the dictionary? Plus, hybrid refers to plants while cross breed refers to animals.

Mating is the physical activity, breeding is the production of offspring. A neutered dog can still mate, but cannot breed. You can't tell if a pair of animals is successfully breeding without checking for fertilization.
Nice birds.
