Hi! I'm new to this chicken business and just starting my flock. I want to start small, just 3 hens. I've been looking at some Welsummer and Ameraucanas pullets. I really like both breeds and admire their beautiful eggs colors! Since I can't decide, I wanted to try mixing them. Is that a good idea? Some reviews say that Ameraucanas can be kind of aggressive towards other birds. Another breed I'm considering is Barred Plymouth Rock. Thanks for your help!

Hi lulu420,
I never noticed aggression with my Ameraucana among the other breeds, including Welsummer and Barred Rock. You should buy the breeds you like. Once you get them home, they will establish their pecking order and be done. I am sure you will not find aggression a problem. Plus, since you like Welsummers, they lay a dark reddish brown egg, the Ameraucana should lay a greenish blue egg and the Barred Rock would lay a light brown egg. Not only will have a nice colorful basket of eggs to look forward to, you will also have a beautiful variation of hens, each with their own personality to love. Enjoy!!

I have found that chickens is chickens. While birds that are all the same color tend to flock together, most breeds of chickens tend to get along with each other just fine. Check out my sig for all the birds that I have roaming together!

Thanks for your suggestions! I ended up getting a mixed flock of several different breeds (based in availability), and they all seem to get along well!
