MJ's Challenge ~ The Voyage Out

Yes LOTF was a High School read for me too. What I took away was don't ever leave a group of boys to fend for themselves! 🤣 I know when they did the movie they lost control of the mob & there was nearly a tragedy. :( I never read another Golding. Heart of Darkness was another novel that turned me completely off an author.

Plath is just b..... brilliant!
His other novels are not as well known. I don't even recall which I read, but I have Free Fall and The Inheritors on the shelf, so it was probably those two.

I haven't read any Conrad yet.

I haven't read Plath. I read LOTF when I was too young I think.

Have we all read/are reading chapt 2? Let us know where you are up to.
I got pulled into work so am still in Chapter 2 - will get some in tonight before going to bed. I am immersing myself slowly so a bit early for me to have views - it sort of interrupts my immersion to react too soon. I have found curious so far how little attention is being paid to the purpose of the journey. No sense of adventure, hope, foreboding. No sense of anything really. The only thing is Helen not wanting to leave her kids but even that begs the question of why do so. I am sure all will be revealed!

So terribly tragic to go through life like that! I hope she found some happiness somewhere along the way!
She did. From the few biographies I've skimmed through she had episodes of ill health and lived a happy life between the episodes. I believe she was in good health more often than not.

That said, there's no doubt her episodes gave her a unique perspective that played out in her work.

I can handle pretty much anything! So, I'm in this for the long haul! What I shared is just what stood out to me the most! I'm looking forward to seeing how the characters develop and deal with each other in what is basically a confined space! I'm also truly enjoying what you all are sharing. Like I said this is a new experience for me and I'm enjoying the experience of sharing and learning from all of you!
