MJ's Challenge ~ The Voyage Out

Oh. I read that completely differently. I read that convention says she must seem the concerned wife but the reality is he will work & doesnt really need a rest @ all.
Interesting!

Either way, she's compelled to say and do things she doesn't believe, to live an untruthful life. So convention is a thorn to her (silent while the men talk) and a cushion to her husband (speak what you like).

Perhaps Mrs Dalloway will reveal the antidote?

I don't think so somehow. She seems a bastion of conventionality & not a major fan of the arts. She is also extremely privileged so I'm not really sure about her grasp on some of the uglier realities of life ~ despite what Woolfe shows about her.

I went ahead and read chapter 3 on the weekend.

Does anyone want to share thoughts?
I read 3 on Friday night but I need to refresh I think. I remember finding Mrs Dalloway funny. And I don't think there's anything remotely normal about her ~ though I think Woolfe was trying to present her as the most normal of a bunch of eccentrics. I find her the most abnormal ~ which probably says more about me than her. :lau

I am finding it difficult to pace myself so everyone is included. Should we nominate a day to discuss the present chpt under review for each week?

Sounds good! Can we also leave the door open for people to discuss earlier/later chapters if they want to?

Ah, yes...The 1st hints of Woolfe's views on sexism, suffragettes, the arts, the pomposity of the over educated but under practical start emerging though the voices of her characters.
I liked the direct speech!

I feel like I'm pushing this wheelbarrow rather too often, but even loquacious Mrs Dalloway isn't entirely honest, shaping her words to propriety rather than her thoughts.

Truth is important to you.

I find this brings to the surface our own priorities & world views. I dislike pomposity so all the men are annoying me no end! :gig I also dislike the silly social conversations ~ ie flowers in the sea~ so am irritated by nearly all the characters @ least some of the time.
