MJ's Challenge ~ The Voyage Out

I don't feel susceptible to the characters, so even if the whole novel is sad, it won't have an impact on my emotions.

On the other hand, I'm finding stream of consciousness quite readable for a change. And I'm still captivated by the lyricism.
I'm finding it a bit stilted & pretentious @ the moment but she will probably relax a bit in the following chapters. Knowing it's been heavily edited makes me wonder how badly that has affected the writing style.

Same here.

The thing that stuck in my mind was why do the brothers have different surnames? 🤔
ACM: are you able to reference this? I don't recall reading this so now I'm concerned I've missed something important. It's the worst of reading fast.

I haven't connected with any of the characters either. Any sadness I feel is more for the author...in reading this, I can't help but wonder if her feelings and emotional state are what we are seeing.

Woolf was notoriously unstable. Anything of hers I've tried has this underlying sadness.

This also ended up being quite a different novel from the one she originally wrote ~ which must have been devastating in many ways but she was told edit or your career is over before it's begun. She edited but I'm sure that can't have made her happy. Most authors don't take well to having their work meddled with.
