MJ's little flock

Very sensible. Stay home until it all goes away. Which for me feels like it won't be until March! Bob is more optimistic.
I have faith in Phyllis.

I cannot encourage you enough to close them in at night. A single predator event can kill them all. It would be too late to learn after that. If you don't feel you can reliably close them in, I recommend an automated door.
Oh I do every night now, no sweat. I usually watch chicken tv out the lounge window until they have all gone in then go out and shut the door 👍🏻

I’ve never had a worry until Bok being bald for so long, but with her moult, and having a check for mites prior to that, I see that it’s coming back, so I guess I’m lucky (touch wood)
I’ll keep an eye on it all of course but if there’s no need to treat I’ll refrain. It’s like worms, I don’t do it every 6 months or so but if I think they are a bit off I’ll pop some worming liquid in the water to be safe.
Again, I’m learning as I go and being a part of yours and bob’s threads is teaching me so much to look for. At the same time I think I’ve been very lucky for an apprentice chickeneer to avoid these things.
Predators is another front I’m lucky with I believe, my run is lax compared to you guys, though I do shut their coop now after joining you guys as a precaution.
Sorry, a novel happened there!!

edit to correct: I don’t religiously do it very 3 or 6 months like others may do but...
I strongly echo Bob's advice. I lost my first three hens in one overnight predator attack. You can't be too careful with your girls at night

I wanted to emote both sad and angry for this.
Why the 🤬 would someone do this to her? The speckled Sussex I’m talking about.
As I said in @BY Bob’s thread a bit ago, I didn’t even know beak trimming was a thing 😔
I mean, how can she eat, preen etc :hit
It was such an extreme case and on a speckled sussex and only her top beak. I think it was some kind of accident. Now that I'm over the shock (it stayed with me for a long time) I can't believe she wasn't euthanised. I think it's what I would do if the same happened to one of my beloved hens.
