MJ's little flock

Janet hasn't laid an egg for 8 days. It's very unlike her. Ordinarily she lays 3-4 eggs a week. She's not moulting and she doesn't appear to be unwell, so she may have entered retirement and I'm hoping it's a long one!

Aunty says what's the point? I say she does the weeding for me, she enriches the sandy soil with her poops, and she gives the garden a special little sparkle.
Companionship is not a point? Why do people always feel that chickens have to earn their keep at all times? :barnie

How old is she now?

There have been some interesting surveys on the overall benefit to society for particular jobs.
I think refuse collectors came at the top of the list for most value to society.
I think lawyers, bankers and marketing people came last.
What does auntie do apart from piss you off?:p
Hahaha! Good call on the marketing, although she's retired now. She lives in Queensland and was staying with me last weekend.

Some people have a strongly transactional way of viewing the world, themselves and others, as though transactions aren't a human invention. It's not great.

On most topics, she's a delight but she prefers when others adopt her wisdom. Rather than vice versa.

I try not to frame the hens as serving any purpose other than her own whims, but sometimes others oblige me to account for their presence.

She's four-ish Bob. There are no signs of egg binding or anything like that. We have had a cold snap, so maybe the weather has interrupted her. Unlike Mary, who has been stepping down gradually from laying, Janet has shown no signs of slowing down until Wednesday last week which was her first day without producing an expected egg.

At 4 years old I would think she has a few eggs left yet. Although Lilly really slowed down by the time she was 5.

You should be approaching your shortest days of the year. Maybe she is just done for the winter?

I'm with stopping for the winter. I've been lucky to get 2 eggs a day from 16 hens this week & one day I got none @ all. That so rarely happens I went & looked for hidden nests. 😆

It seems there are some rather good bugs to be found in this spot.

The mystery of Janet's laying is solved.

It seems she is having a moult after all.
