MJ's little flock

Mary's home!

Mark says she probably got a hernia pushing an egg out. Then a big lump of fat grew around the hernia, squishing her organs. Now the fat's gone and the hernia's fixed, she should be absolutely fine. She even laid 3 eggs in the two days since her surgery!

Of course, they've all fallen for her. Who wouldn't?

She was letting out a few of those delighted bokking episodes in the car, as if she knew she was going home, but I reckon she was simply delighted to be doing something other than poking around the cage at Mark's surgery. And to be feeling better. Can you imagine how uncomfortable she must've been with her insides all jammed up like that.

She has to be kept inside at night for now, so Blossom has moved out of her sleepout to make way for Mary. It has a concrete floor which will clean up ok in the morning. She can go outside during the day.

She has a follow up appointment next Friday morning.
I'm so very very happy for you both. Such a wonderful outcome. ❤️

Coming up to 5.

Here she is this morning. It's not the best environment for a chicken but it'll have to do while the weather's so chilly.

Good morning/evening MJ and everyone 😊😴

That's great to hear about Mary 💖 :hugs You are indeed very lucky.
Thank you for caring 🥰 it means a lot to know she was in your thoughts

By the way Bob, Mark says he hasn't seen many chicken hernias, mostly dogs and cats, but as lots of people simply put their hens to sleep, he doesn't have any reliable incidence data.

That's the thing. Gloria was the same but without the technology.
Technology makes a huge difference. It was amazing to see Mary's xrays. The egg was so obvious. Her spurs went right into her legs and merged with her leg bone. The lump and her squished up organs were very clear. The bits of food in her crop could be seen too.
