MJ's little flock

Well, we're back from Joyce's vet appointment and now we have a diagnosis of EYP confirmed through a sample taken from within her swelling.

I took her on her own, thinking if she was egg bound, they might want to admit her. So it was a trip in the picnic basket.

You can see her pain in her little face.

So she continues on Lincospectin. If she survives it'll be due to the linco.

Her next appointment, assuming she hasn't died in the meantime, is next Thursday morning.

I'm thinking some pain relief wouldn't go astray. Half a baby aspirin, if I recall correctly. I'll get some from the shop and give her a dose twice a day.

Poor lady. She does seem to be in pain. We are sending positive energy your way. Hopefully the antibiotics will work. :hugs :hugs

I couldn't get baby aspirin so I got infant paracetamol instead. Do you think that's ok Bob? After all, we're probably talking palliative care.

It's a cherry vanilla flavoured liquid and I can give her half a dose on cheese, I'm sure she'll scoff it down.

No, it's not the same. Acetaminophen is potentially lethally toxic to chickens at a very small dose, it has been cleared for use recently, but you must be extremely careful with the amount. I gave some to Brune knowing she was dying. Let me just check on the dosage.

I hope she makes it. She's still young.
I had not treated Caramel when she had EYP (I hadn't identified it) and both survived for a few more months.

I'm not sure if antibiotics can actually cure the problem of internal laying, or just treat the infection, with a chance of it happening again ?

It's my second encounter with EYP and last time we were looking at clearing the infection then a hysterectomy. I daresay that's on the cards for Joyce if the infection clears.

I'm hoping for the best. I often wonder what would have happened if I had gone that course with mine.
I have to open the chickens and can't track my source but I noted on the paracetamol package 1mg / kg of bird safe dosage. I gave just the tiniest pinch of powder to Brune and she responded very much.
