I thought she was one of the rescues. She did allright. I wonder how old she was.

I've been wondering that too. She only laid three eggs since coming to live with me and all three were not what I'd call proper eggs. They had super chalky thick shells, super huge, and no yolks. So I guess she was 4-5 years old at least.

Christa passed away last night. She didn't give many tell-tale signs of ill-health. I thought she was having a chilly winter rather a sickness, but when I got home from work yesterday she was moving very slowly indeed so I made an appointment for her on Friday morning. She died a few hours later. She seemed heavy-ish in my hand but very thin around her breast bone. The weight was more towards the tail. I'm thinking she may have had cancer in her reproductive organs. I won't pursue a postmortem. She's wrapped in a pillowcase/shroud and in the freezer where she will stay until I have time to bury her.

Thank you RC. The hens' lifestyle at my place is not as nice as the hens' lifestyle at your place, but they're never in need of anything except more to graze upon.

Well I don’t know about that - mine have never experienced a washing machine for example!

I will also always remember both her and Joyce as the river refugees experimenting the washing machine !
In a way it's nice that she passed so suddenly because she maybe did not experience much pain. And she certainly had a lovely and interesting second life at your place.
You were kind and did well by those two chickens your aunt dropped by.
