MJ's little flock

She hasn’t laid for over a month now. Not since she had a light moult.

They are all off the lay at the moment with some feather loss. Before that she was laying every two or three days

That's a nice slow down. She may be terrorizing other hens for years to come! Very exciting.

That’s good to know about breeders and also the care standards. When the technology for sexing eggs is sound, hopefully it will be adopted and shredding will cease. I don’t think people will ever stop buying cage eggs (at least, not in Western, individualistic countries) and at this point, unfortunately, free-range male chicks are also shredded (the companies whose eggs you buy in the big shops, not smaller-scale free-range businesses).

I actually have high hopes on the caged egg front. The state of California has banned the sale of eggs from caged hens. I am hoping that other states will soon follow suit.

I believe I am personally having an effect on some people. They are shocked when I tell them the living conditions. Around here it's $1 more a dozen for cage free eggs. Not a lot to ask for hens to have a life of some kind.

I'm pretty sure prices align to what customers can tolerate, over and above recouping cost of goods sold.

That's your answer. People who want free range eggs are willing to pay more for them. Outlaw caged egg production and the price will drop like a rock. We already have enough cage free producers here where the difference is down to $1.

Seems all the Aussie chooks had trouble roosting tonight. @Ribh had trouble, @LozzyR R had to chivvy them along, and I had to intervene when Mary strangely decided to go all peckasaurus rex on Sandy, which was very out of character. I can't tolerate Sandy being pecked, she's had a hard life already. So I put Mary on a different roost and as I did so, her wings got free and her flapping surprised Janet so much, she fell off her spot. So then I helped Janet back up. By that time it was nearly dark, so I spoke gently for five minutes until everyone's knees bent and their eyes closed. Then I crept out and came inside to discover all the Aussie chooks had gone bonkers.

Add Aurora to that list. She had bee in her bonnet last night.

And add the Chicken Palace. I didn’t see or get what happened in video but something happened because Maggie didn’t get her favorite spot. I will move the camera back onto the roosts for tonight.

It's not just the chooks, people be crazy too!! LOL :lau

Working in healthcare, I follow the moon cycles very closely. The weird of the weird happens around the full moon.

My wife was an ER nurse for years. She swore by the moon and they all tracked it. Craziest patients during a full moon.

That’s awesome, go California! :thumbsup A former prime minister once eloquently described Australia as being at “the a*** end of the world” so we will probably be last to follow suit. :he

Good morning folks :frow

@LozzyR I'm uncertain how widespread your factory farms are, but you folks have a really strong showing in the pasture raised (aka permaculture) regenerative egg production and you guys invented the best mobile coop (chicken caravan) on the market today.
