MJ's little flock

Tap having a dust bath. Treacle is by my feet and I've been shelling walnuts. I gave Treacle quite a large piece and he did his utmost to entice Tap out of her bath by picking the piece up and dropping it again clucking a nodding like a lunatic; Tap wasn't budging.:lau

Sometimes nothing will get a lady out of the bath. Kudos to Treacle for trying. I hope he then enjoyed the nut himself?

It's the grass that oats grow on. There are still a few oats on the grass stalks, so it's a big hit with the chickens. According to an exporter in Perth, Avena Sativa is the proper name for it. I bought this brand: https://www.torwoodfarm.com.au/

Sorry Lozzy, didn't realise you'd already answered until after I posted.
I have never heard of that but I may try and find it now. They go crazy when I put fresh chopped straw in the coop, I can't imagine how they would enjoy that!

It seems much stiffer than straw in the stems, so I put a very thick layer down for the hens to nestle into. I'm hoping it tempts them into the nest box for nibbles and once they're in there, they'll be reminded how much they like laying eggs :gigi can dream.

It can be quite difficult to get the males to eat any treats. Most of the time they will drop them and give the I've found food call hoping to attract a hen or two. This is okay with the senior roosters but with the juniors it also attracts the senior roosters who chase the juniors away.
Treacle and Notch will drop the food for me it seems. I have to walk away before they will eat.
A partial solution is to feed the males very small pieces. They seem to think that such small offerings are not going to give them many points with the hens so they may as well eat them. Give them half a walnut and one would think they had just dug up a pot of gold.:D

Fascinating.

That is really interesting. I would assume they know what the ladies want most and what gives them the biggest increase in points with them. I do love how roosters give priority to their hens. It's quite gentlemanly.
