MJ's little flock

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure in AUS the term shell grit refers to oystershell aka Calcium. Can't remember how they refer to grit aka granite.

I wasn’t aware of granite as a grit. My girls have access to the backyard so I’m guessing that’s not a problem for them.

Good morning folks :frow

Typically in the US it's granite or quartz, something really hard that will last a while in the gizzard. But if you have rocky soil, they make due just fine.

We are all good here. I dont work on a friday and love spending the day in the yard with them!! 2 are laying now although one is giving a lot with soft shells. They are on a commercial layer pellet and shell grit. Any advice would be welcome. Do i need oyster shell grit rather than general shell grit?
Two good ones out of a dozen says to me there's a problem. A vet visit as others have said may be a good idea; it rather depends on the vet.
I think @rjohns39 suggestion of poor calcium uptake is likely. Whether a 'normal' vet will know how to test for this, or what to give for it is doubtfull.
I see very few soft shelled or no shelled eggs here. If I do, I'm worried. None of the pullets have started off laying soft shelled eggs here. The few times I've seen them, the hen has been sick.
