MJ's little flock

An update on my soft shell eggs. The avian vet had no appointments left before Christmas but was amazing spending time with me on the phone and telling me what to do with no payment required. Since then I have not had another soft shell egg and all 4 ladies are now laying!! Such an exciting Christmas present!! It turns out I thought I was doing the correct thing by feeding lots of fruit and veg leftovers from the house. I thought this would be really healthy for them but vet told me to stop for awhile so they only have the layer pellets and to add calcium with Vit D to their water every day for a week and then once a week after that - problem solved!! Not many vets would take time on the phone at such a busy time of year. I was impressed and thankful. I now know that ‘treats’ include household scraps not just meal worms, wheat and corn so will provide in small amounts occasionally. Thank you all for your support and setting my chickens on a healthier path. It is a steep learning curve!!
I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas.
That is the best news. What a wonderful gift before the holidays. Merry Christmas. 🎄

I've been watching the whole sorry affair on various news sites. What concerns me is the worst is yet to come.
It isn't much better here in Spain. While the government isn't givng quite as much money away to it's mates, the supposed relief payments don't seem to exist. I know quite a few young people in particular who are entitled to these payments but after months of applying, still haven't received a cent.
In some respects I'm fortunate in that I only have to look out for myself.....and the chickens and ducks of course.
Families, where all the wage earners have been put out of work through one reason or another just can't survive without help.

It really is a sad state right now. My neighbor is 64, 1 year shy of Medicare, she is self-employed as a baby sitter. When the first shut down came in the Spring she closed as she had too. She could no longer afford her private health insurance so she was granted an exception and was able to start Medicare. She was also able to collect unemployment, but it took 3 months to receive the initial payment. Now she received a letter that she is "making too much money" collecting unemployment so her Medicare is going to be cancelled. She has not been able to reopen her business. She had to chose between income and health care.

This county is fundamentally screwed up right now and you are correct, the worse is yet to come.

I know Treacle has a few admirers here and I've mentioned in the past that Punch is a better looking rooster. Today I got a couple of shots that might show you why I think this.
Punch.
