I appreciate your kindnesses, chicken friends.
I've been feeling bad because Sandy's eggs have never had bloom on them. I didn't know that was a symptom of metritis. I thought she was just a little unique in her egg production, which might be expected in a hybrid laying hen. If she ever gets back to normal, I will be very interested in observing the finish on her eggs.
Its a coating the chicken puts on the egg to keep bacteria out. This may have already been asked and answered and I haven’t got to it yet, but what is bloom? I have not heard of this term in relation to eggs.

Oh no! I'm so sorry you lost her and in that way too. How awful. She was a beautiful hen.MJ, unfortunately my neighbors dog also liked my Australorp and subsequently used it as a rag doll and left it dead with a broken neck, here she is, or was

That sounds lovely. It's spring here, approaching summer. Twice this week I had to keep the hens cool by putting them into their house and turning on the misting system. Mary in particular struggles on a hot day. They dislike being kept in but at least they're cool and there's plenty of food and water. No foraging though.MJ it is Fall weather here this morning, 54 degrees when I left the house a 3AM and very breezy, but it should warm up nicely by the time I get home...
