My neighbour suggested I make a shelter from hay bales before the next heat wave. It's a good idea. I'll give it a try.

I'm thinking two bales psitioned parallel but maybe a metre apart, planks of wood spanning the gap, then four bales across the top.it would be open both ends. I could run the sprinkler at one end so the ground stays wet and any breeze will pick up a mist.

Then in winter you can let them scratch the bales to pieces and create a deep litter. (Just watch as they can go moldy in the middle if they're wet for too long).

I got Lucy and Emily a bale of straw to kick to bits to keep themselves amused. They chose to sit on it in the winter sun. When I decided to remove it (about a year later) it was moldy in the middle, so I spread it about outside the run so the girls didn't ingest the mold.

I really like this idea, I might try it out myself!

We used to have a massive Liquid Amber in the back yard a year ago but we cut it down. Whilst it provided good shade, it dropped leaf litter everywhere and kept annoying the neighbours. I'd like to plant a couple more trees, but ones that don't get so big.

The cool change arrived! Time for the hens to form orderly line and march back outside with me outfront, brandishing a head of lettuce.



Despite my best intentions and carefully positioned chicken chute arranged from dining chairs, that's not how it happened.

Sandy said, "oh, you want me to go this way? Ok. Oh! I can see the outside! *blink blink* looks great. I'm heading out you guys! Hey, I found a lettuce leaf!"

What a champ. I love that hen.

Janet said, "Yeh, nah. I'm gonna go the wrong way. Alright, alright, stop nagging me, I'll follow Sandy if you really insist. Oh! It's the outside!! Ruuuuuunnnn!! *dead stop* lettuce!"

Mary said, "What's happening??? Eeeek!!! Oh. These dining chairs are good perches. I'll just hop up here and *poop*"



MJ says, "Noooooo those were Mary Kopscanyi's dining chairs and now there's Mary Chicken poop on them!! Come here you trouble maker. *grab* *catch* *pick up* *tuck in* Really? Why are you so easy to pick up today?"

MJ verbally, "Who's my good girl? So brave being picked up. Now let's get you back in your chicken yard. There's my sweet brave girl." I knelt down and loosened my grip...

Mary said, "Axe murderer!!! Run away, run away, run away!!!"



Give me another hour and I may have a usable bathroom again

You should point out to Mary that if your intentions were that deplorable the foxes would have had her for dinner by now!!! Silly girl.

Bessie got bedtime cuddles. Charlie gets the occasional one but she has started squatting for me, so I haven’t been cuddling her as much.
