This guy knows a bit about chickens. His pictures are well worth looking at. He's extremely pleasant to chat to if you can work with his English.
No, you got me right the first time.
I'm thinking about gone feral type land race.
I'll check your link out. Thank you.
I must admit, I see more similarities than differences, but that's probably got something to do with the company i keep. That is very interesting. I've never considered that before.
That's a shame. I'm very grateful for my neighbours - the whole street is a friendly bunch.@Shadrach: I have been thinking some more on what you asked. There is an old family farm up the road from us. 2nd generation French immigrants & still run by 3 brothers. I think they have a set up similar to yours. They got our Wyandotte cockerels. Their birds all free range without human intervention but I have no idea what they started with or how many birds are generally on their property. They aren't very friendly but my man used to fish with them so if there is something specific you want to know he may know. Asking is probably out of the question. They just won't open the door to visitors.![]()
As far as I know (which is not far at all) no one has landrace chickens in South Australia. Those producing eggs from free ranging hens all use production hybrids and cull-replace once they're no longer economical.@Shadrach: I have been thinking some more on what you asked. No eggs yet. And tomorrow will be too hot for her to lay an egg. Maybe I'll get lucky on Friday.Mary
I have a suspicion she's getting ready to provide an egg or two! Fingers crossed.
You might find a plumbers blow torch (gas canister type) works out cheaper.
