Beautiful story and chicken. I am looking into getting chickens. Australorp is at the top of my list, but all the hatcheries were sold out. I decided to wait until next year instead of just getting some thing else. Are they as friendly and awesome as they sound? My animals are more pets then anything else. The eggs are just a bonus.

Mary is a very gentle hen who almost never picks on other chickens. However, she's not tame. From what I saw of how she was handled by her breeder, I think she would have been injured every time she was handled. We've had a very slow road to trust and we're still on it. In spite of this, I wouldn't trade her for anything. She's my "steady as a rock" friend who shelters the little chickens when they're getting picked on.

I would not have another one. It's not too hard to vacuum by hand and avoid that.

I avoid the problem by setting the timer for when I'm home. That way, if there's a Blossom poop on the floor, I can get to it first. In Blossom's defence, because she just gave me a hard look, there's NEVER any poop on the floor. Except that one time

I use a broom & a mop. Neither need the internet ~ just a willing 3rd party.

Much like myself then. I have been known to use a tiff bristle scrubbing brush as well. Hands and knees job.
I would like a vacuum cleaner but the brand I like, Miele, are quite expensive. The main house has a Dyson; it's a pile of crap. I've used it to do the roof beams here.

A tip. Avoid hatchery stock if you can. Find a breeder and check them out. In the long run if you want chickens as pets it can save you an enormous amount of heartache.
