I've never had to medicate a chicken directly, but I have had to medicate many other animals.

The easiest way I found, if you can, is to use a bit of bread or other tasty treat to get her to eat the medication. I had a horse who refused ALL oral meds. He was also well over 16h tall and could raise his head almost 8 feet in the air. In order to worm him or give any other medication, I made him a PBJ sandwich.

Obviously Peggy is MUCH smaller, so she might only need a bit of tuna or a cracker to take her medication. I know she has some restrictions now, but I still feel that is much safer then trying to get liquid down a twitchy bird throat.

I was going to suggest similar - how big a volume do you have to give her MJ? Could you soak a piece of break or even use it as the liquid to make mash (if it is a big volume).

Friends, I have a question.

Tonight I have to give her Clavulox drops. It's my first time giving medicine to a chicken. It came with a regulated dropper so I'll be ok to draw the correct dose. There are lots of videos online but which are the most instructive and reliable? Also, do you have any advice or tips?

I've got a headlamp ready to go.

When I’ve had to administer liquid, I’ve put a towel around the wings to stop flapping. I’ve then knelt down, sitting on my heels and had the hen tucked in between. Peggy is going to fight you, she will try to draw her head away backwards. You need to force her beak open and angle the dropper to the side. The liquid has to go down the side of the throat (either side is fine I believe) so she doesn’t aspirate. Administer a few drops at a time so you know it’s going the right way. She will hate it and you will feel awful but it needs to be done. Do it this way if you don’t have someone to hold her for you. Maybe you can ask your chicken-neighbour for some help and moral support.

Edit: I noticed some advice re soaking the meds up with food. You could try that, so long as she eats it all.

I've done what Lozzy does with a chicken with no appetite but it's not easy with just one person until they get used to it. If she will eat something soaked in medication I would go with that.

It worked really well with the cheese! The whole dose went into the chicken.
