MJ's little flock

I can start to visualize it now.
I'm surprised at the number of posts. Daisy the tradie says so many are needed to support the beams properly. Surprised but delighted because it has 8 different sections instead of 5, so there will be lots of scope for enclosing little sections to eg let the weeds grow or look-don't-touch or enabling some respite should we end up with an incorrigible bully one day. I could even integrate veggie boxes within the run. So many possibilities.

Woah! I am subject to feelings of guilt with the best of people, but do NOT go down that path. There is no reason to think that is the case and you have been, and continue to be the most wonderful chicken-Mum.
clear any such thoughts from your brain.
I don't feel guilty because I was (and still am) on my chicken keeping learning curve and Peggy might be a special case. But I do feel a sense of responsibility. It's a matter of owning a mistake and ensuring better practices henceforth, rather than guilt.

By the way, the hens are doing so well around the tradies, keeping themselves safe by hiding under the bottlebrush. And after the tradies have gone home, the hens are very happy to go back into their house to fill up on pellets and dig through the bedding before turning in.

I'm in the minority I expect, but I'm not a fan of mealworms. I view them as I do fast food. I know the chickens like them but they are very high in fat and not great for protein.
What they are is easy.
I haven't bought any since I learned about Peggy's liver.

The section where I'd like to put a raised roosting box one day is quite large too! So there will be ample roost space in the future. I think there's space for four quite roomy nest boxes between posts too. Or two really large nesting boxes.

Yes! And you can fix some brackets and have day perches between posts or hang waterers or hanging food baskets from some posts. What fun!!!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

This recipe is from one of the kid's cookbooks that I recommended to Ribh a while ago. It's our family's favourite and pretty easy to make.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

1/3 cup caster sugar 1 ¼ cup plain flour

1/3 cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

125g softened butter ¼ teaspoon salt

1 egg 185g chocolate chips

½ teaspoon vanilla essence

Method

Set the oven to 190 C. Beat the butter with both lots of sugar in a mixing bowl until it has a creamy texture.

Break the egg into the bowl and beat it into the mixture until smooth. Then add the vanilla essence and mix it in.

Add the flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda to the mixture a little at a time and stir everything together well.

Now add the chocolate chips and stir them in until they are evenly spread through the biscuit mixture.

Butter the baking trays and spoon small mounds of the mixture onto them (using a teaspoon),leaving quite big spaces between the mounds.

Bake the biscuits for 10 to 12 minutes until they are a golden brown colour, then move them onto a wire rack to cool.
