MJ's little flock

I'm reading the weekend away because I'm leading a bookclub discussion Monday night.

And I'm getting desperate for something that doesn't feel like work, so tell me: What's everyone up to this weekend?

Right now, it's dinner time!

Two more chapters to go before I'm halfway through and ready for bed. It doesn't sound like much and I'll do it, but I've been reading since 11am and I'm over it.

Tomorrow I'll read the second half of the book.
That's sad. Reading should never seem like a chore. I'm sorry that has been your weekend.

I thought book clubs were supposed to be fun!
What book?
I am having a leisurely morning with the chickens enjoying the sudden drop in temperature and humidity.
The big thing for me today is watering some of the new shrubs - it is hard for them in this drought.

So glad the weather is cooling down for you and that you're making the most of it.

It's a work-related bookclub, we read books on AI and ethics. This one is Alone Together by Sherry Turkle, which is an excellent read. Usually I read the book chapter by chapter over a month, but this time around I prioritised several other commitments like Janet's many trips to the vet for antibiotics and my brother's cataract surgery. I enjoy cramming a book on a rainy weekend with a fire burning, but the loss of time for other projects is not great and I don't like reading to a tight schedule at the best of times because it inevitably curtails reflection.

I tried a book club once. I stuck with it for my 12 month membership then chucked it. I'm an avid reader but they chose such dreadful &/or boring material I got super frustrated & it certainly wasn't fun.

If it weren't work-related, I wouldn't do it. I'd spend time with friends and family or on the house instead.

Why does everyone I know who joins a book club say this? That is certainly not an endorsement for them.

It's because no ones knows what books we should read next like we do. It's a personal decision like what colour to wear that day. Books speak of and to someone's psychology.

The minute someone says, "I've got a book you must read, you'll love it!" I already know I probably won't like it.

If I meet someone who's read and loved the same books as me: instant friends for life!!

The compromise for the group ruins it. It feels a bit like high school too. We read the book together and discuss it together and it has to be so much by this date. No thanks.
