I had forgotten that clip of Pamela Mitford with her chickens.
I was a huge Nancy Mitford fan and read them all multiple times. A fascinating family indeed.
I went to a sculpture exhibition at Asthall Manor a few years ago ( came across it quite by chance). It was one of the Mitford family homes. It isn’t open to the public but the gardens were open for the sculpture exhibition and I shamelessly pressed my nose up against the windows at every opportunity!

What did you see RC? Did you see the scratched on swastika and the hammer and sickle??

Just rushed Tegan to the vet. She’s coughing, breathing through her mouth and seems to have trouble eating.

What did the vet say, Lozzy?

You’d be surprised what a Momma hen can do. When Cashew was broody, she had lost a lot of weight and was pretty weak from sitting for weeks. She was pretty small as a buffer Orpington to begin with. Buttercup is my light Brahma, and the biggest in the flock by far. When buttercup act toward a chick, Kashi defending the check ferociously. She went after butter cup, and the two of them were jumping up and down chest bumping over and over again. I was quite worried since cashew was so weak and buttercup is so big. But Cashew won; she pretty much beat the crap out of Buttercup.

At the vet, having her euthanised now. She wasn’t going to get any better and we’re not in a position to have exploratory surgery. Can’t stop crying.

Ha! No. The house is early 17th Century so the windows are a bit small and without lights on inside it was hard to see in detail. But it was definitely evocative of Love in a Cold Climate - I could easily imagine them running down the corridors and hiding in the airing cupboard.
When I visited the garden it was owned by a private family. I just looked it up and it looks like it is somehow available for rent. Like a hotel but not quite. You can rent it for a night or for a week. They are quoting 15-20,000 UK Pounds for a week! Housekeeping staff available but I assume cost extra. Shame, I would have liked to spend a night there.
The benefit of this change in the house’s situation is that now there is a website with pictures.

It is just the hardest thing. You know she had a lovely life with you.
