I'm hatching a plan.
There's a sheet of unused but painted ply I wasted when I was learning how to build the roosting box.

At present it rests on logs which the mice use as cover for the on and off ramps to their superhighways.
Here's the side of the roosting box.

If I attach the sheet of ply to the horizontal beam with hinges, it'll be possible to fold it up at night and hook it to the vertical beam. If the ply has two legs, also on hinges, it can be let down in the morning to provide extra shade.
Then I can remove the logs. And have a flat surface at workbench height on which to do things like weigh the hens in the evening. And it'll fold up out of the way when needed.
Hmmm seems like an easy project.
