Numerous tiny shards of rusted metal. Two bent nails. A bottle cap. A bent staple. Some wire.

That was from the external perimeter of the run.

I'm surprised I've had so few digestive problems among the hens. That said, I wonder if this is how Mary got her hernia?

Each time I sweep a patch I've already swept, even more metal is picked up. I'm going to have to keep going over and over the ground until nothing turns up.

The uneven ground swipes small pieces off but the bigger ones like nails and staples hang on no matter what. I'm not as worried about that as I was at first.

The good news is I found nothing under the pergola.

Katie has no tail left.

And she's looking rather dishevelled with her mix of brand new and very old feathers. But she eats well and has energy, so I'm hopeful she's in good health.

Mary's tail is always down but she's mostly a very happy hen.
