MJ's little flock

Hi friends, I'm better now (mostly) and will try to spend more time on BYC. The Vulture is starting to crow but he's so quiet it seems premature to take him to the vet. Most days he doesn't crow at all. 2-3 days week he crows quietly. Katie is broody, but I'm not trying another hatch. I haven't the energy for it. I'm very sad to say Erica died last week. It was sudden. I'm not going to pursue an autopsy. However, I have found an affordable cremation option, which I'm going to try with Erica and if it works out nicely, I'll use that option in future. Melissa seems to be doing well. Mary has started what looks like hiccups, so I'll be making an appointment for her tomorrow. Ivy and Peggy are moulting (so is Mary) and it seems nobody has a tail right now. I've had a house guest (my cousin from Berlin) and next weekend I have another house guest (my aunty from Queensland). Work is very busy. I hope all of you are doing well and I'd love an update if you feel like writing one. Thanks to all of you who reached out through text messages and the post, I was very touched.

I finally get to some catching up to find you have been unwell. Glad to hear you are doing better now.

I have been watching Alfred creep down the coast. Early predictions said he'd cross @ Rocky [too close for comfort] & now it's my boys in the direct line of fire. My mum will also be affected so I'm hoping it will peter out somewhat before it crosses. All my hens are nearly finished their moult but Leonard still looks terribly bedraggled. 🧡 💛 💚

Had to look for more info about Cyclone Alfred.
I missed this or it was not on our news at all. They are too busy here with Ukraine, Putin, Trump vs Zelensky, Israel/Palestine, economics , prepare for war , European leaders, an idiot in Germany etc.
Down under was probably too far away to hit the news. 🗞️
Good luck you all. 🧡🤞

Thought I'd share a photo so you can see how big The Vulture is.

He is surprisingly easy to be around. I respect his space. I respect his relationship with Melissa. He has only rushed at me twice and he didn't make contact. I realised it was because I ran late with dinner, so I serve up on time and he leaves me be.
He's beautiful! (as are all your ladies!) I would cross my fingers that he stays quiet, but I know that probably won't be the case. :hugs

Wishing all of you well. Hope it doesn't do too much damage.

How is it going with Leonard?

Well, next doors had a little chat with me yesterday (quite friendly but a gentle comment was shared), so I made his appointment. I'm eating breakfast outside as I write this update and he is much louder today.

He and Mary are seeing Dr Mark on Friday. If anything, her respiration is worsening.

I'll be giving him an excess of treats until then so he can have a couple of days of rampant luxury.

Can't rehome him? I'm terribly behind on your news.

I do not understand people's objections to roosters when we live with trucks, Motorbikes, trains, planes, jack hammers, lawnmowers etc - all of which I find far more offensive than a rooster. Hope he has a lovely few days.

As you know, I also prefer to hatch over buying, but so far this has not worked out.

I was thinking of your choices when I reached out on the Aussies thread to try and find a home for the Vulture. No answers yet.

The sparsely populated long distances between cities in Australia mean that people who live in rural locations where keeping roosters is feasible don't drive to the city all that often. I have a cousin who lives in such a location, so I asked her about it when I saw her for Christmas and she said if she wanted a rooster she would get one from a neighbour. There are plenty around.

If someone responds on the Aussies thread before the Vulture's appointment on Tuesday, I will gladly take him to their house.
I know I'm late to this but now I'm definitely rural I can say round here there
are always roosters available. Rehoming is not an issue. Where they end up is problematic. My back neighbour seems to have a bachelor pad with 5/6 birds & he doesn't appear to have soup plans but that is not always the case. My friend, who raises beautiful & friendly roosters, has no problems rehoming her extra boys.
