MJ's little flock

That sounds very frustrating. How old are these kids?
I have been dealing with something rather similar recently and I just can’t get my mind around their attitude.
Late teens, early 20s.

I cling to the truth that most do their assignments correctly on their first attempt.

I think the missing ingredient is humility.

Don't they have to be registered with the professional society?

I'm registered (but I'm not in nursing) and I had to show my highest degree, and give two referees who were interviewed about me over the phone before my application was accepted. Now that I'm registered, I have to continue my skills development and those records are all automated.

I don't think it would be possible to fake all of that.
They have a registration. Its a certificate that they have worked under supervision for a number of years and therefore qualified for the job. The bad guys falsify the statements to get the certificate.

Is not a diploma, this is much harder to fake.

I assume the organisation registering them do not thoroughly check up on their expertise.

I have struggled being back in acadamia but I still know how to write a coherent sentance & learn from assignment feedback. My biggest problem is navigating technology - a problem your students probably don't have. 🤣
I’m back in university, too, and it’s quite a challenge.

I’m impressed that most of my fellow students in my major (Environmental Science/ Ecolgy) take it very seriously indeed, but when I’m taking required non-major courses, it’s often pretty… horrifying. An open-armed acceptance of AI/ChatGPT, both for source material (!!!) and to “write” their papers. An unchallenged belief that anything submitted late is just fine. Viewing big ideas (Enlightenment era political thought) through their own narrow lenses, never considering other angles.

I feel badly for them, because they were definitely screwed during Covid, but our professors offer endless support and help, and it’s often shrugged off.

I’m very glad that once I graduate, I won’t be coming out of retirement to work again. 🤞🏻

I don't get AI @ all. I much prefer to structure my own sentences ~ but after 3 changes of major I've reverted to English so that probably isn't a surprise... 🤣 AI isn't allowed for our essays, thankfully.
I was given quite the compliment, having had a prolonged & very civil discussion with my Pastor as we discussed eschatology, [which we approached completely differently] on my ability to debate civilly - a skill our politically correct Millieu seems to have lost but which is absolutely essential.

Mrs BY Bob is a registered nurse. She is licensed by the state and has to perform continuing education in order to maintain her license. Anyone can check on someone's nursing license status through the state.

I genuinely think that's a factor (among many).

Here's an example, it's one of many I could give.

The assignment is skills-based. in other words, you have to do certain things or fail. the tasks are described in detail. about two thirds of the cohort pass.

The other third don't even bother checking their work. They complain to the dean.

OK. Let's set a new deadline and do the marking all over again. Sure, I don't mind lots of extra work for me which was not in the workload when we allocated it last year.

Oh, many still didn't do it right. The second half of the task isn't even attempted. Surely now these young idiots will accept they're in the wrong. No. They send me emails in CAPITAL LETTERS TELLING ME THEY DID THE WORK!!! I look into their case (the third time their half-arsed excuse for learning has been evaluated) and send polite replies pointing out the second part of the task they ignored.

Why do so many of them waste a second chance??? Why so epically stupid and rude??? What kind of a student doesn't read an assignment??? It's only 400 words long. How are they not reading it??? When it's such a high stakes thing that it merits complaints to the dean.

None of this was an issue pre-covid. Every single complaint to the dean in my life is post-covid.

I genuinely think that in lockdown, many parents showed their kids how to complain when they don't get the grade they want instead of seeing a fail as a learning opportunity.
This is very disappointing.

How many asked questions to confirm they understood the assignment? I'm betting none of the ones who failed.

I find this fascinating. I have been hiring from this generation for the past 4 years and I have found some outstanding people. I do encounter some that are less than stellar when interviewing but I've had good success with the ones we hire.

I am not at all surprised to learn this about you.
