MJ's little flock

Today I found a way to meet the "new" requirements with a minimum of disruption and may even grab some leave after all - maybe half of what I'd planned.

But, yes, people who are only half informed but aspirational are wasteful.
This is good news. Nicely done. :thumbsup

Last night there was a missing hen at lock up time. You can imagine the panic and the fear that slowly curdled into horror.

After 10 minutes of searching, I found her and carried her into the roost.

It was Sarah the young white Brahma and she had sat down between the spare coop and the woodshed. Which is rather out in the open! She'd have been fox dinner by morning for sure.

She had to tolerate several kisses as I carried her in.

In other news, I'll be picking up 4 chicks on January 3. I've requested a cream legbar, a welsummer, an easter egger, and a bantam orpington because 4 is the minimum order and these are the breeds they can most reliably sex. I'm hopeful of not having the responsibility of rehoming a cockerel next year. This breeder vaccinates for Marek's. I'll keep them in an indoor brooder until they're old enough for their vaccinations to have become fully systemic. I'm tempted to go full on "crazy chook lady" and set up the brooder in the kitchen for hours of delightful chick watching. But I suppose that wouldn't be hygienic 🙄 I'm going to try puppy training pads in the brooder this time around.
