I think I have some of that on hand- will it sting the chick when applied? The wound, thankfully, is quite clean.

I’ll look for the tar.. that’s a good one to add to the chicken medicine cabinet.

Yes it stings on an open wound. It should stay in contact with the wound for at least 30 seconds by the way.

The blue dye hid the tempting red. It also went away on its own. I have a splash ameraucauna chick (which is almost completely white when young). It is just your average food coloring for baking and does not leave a permanent coloring. Also, i only needed to apply the mixture once and left it alone to heal on its own. Ive had to do this a few times over the years.

I had a similar episode with a 4 week old chick. I now swear by vetericyn spray. I only cleaned the injury once or twice in the very beginning. I sprayed this on twice a day and within 2 weeks she had enough feather coverage to return to her flock.

She recovered completely and now sports a cool little tuff of feathers and the very back of her comb, it's the only way to tell she had any injury there at all.

I do have the vetericyn spray. I think I was concerned about possible pain with applying it, the same as using hydrogen peroxide or something like that which stings like the dickens! Do you think it has a sting to it? I know adult hens can take a lot of hurt, but considering this one just had a long arduous struggle with hatching, then this trauma injury, I didn’t want to risk it going into shock like how some prey animals do.

Ok, I promise I will... but, can you tell me why? I wasn’t aware neosporin had something wrong with it? I’d like to know for the sake of knowing. Other than a few other things, it’s all I’ve got and it’s been ok I think.

No sting at all! I've used it on myself. It's also safe around eyes. I would spray my little one until her fluff was just slightly damp, morning and night. I can't believe how well she healed. She never acted like anything was wrong, out of her sight out of mind.

Yeah, I’m amazed by this little one. It wants to still snuggle, you know how they do by wriggling the top of their head into warmth. I’d think it would hurt with that wound, though it might be the pain reliever neo I was putting on it. Quite ghastly to look on it though- it looks as if the top of its head was sheared off because it’s missing all that fuzz. It doesn’t seem to have a problem.

Something similar happened to a chick I had, and it healed completely after being treated regularly with vetricyn wound spray and polysporin antibiotic.

We had a chick have something similar happen last year. We put ointment on it(I'll have to check my first aid box for what kind) and kept it wrapped with gauze like a bonnet till it healed some. She's a happy laying hen now and just has some scarring that never feathered.
